The Great Brown Hope
One of the favorite pastimes of a party out of power is imagining the hypothetical perfect candidate for returning that party to power. With the GOP currently leaderless and the top prospects for 2012 all sporting obvious flaws, it makes sense that conservatives would be engaged in this kind of daydreaming. Over at The Corner, Jonah Goldberg writes:
In the quest to win back the White House, Democrats were always fantasizing about the perfect candidate to carry their message to the American people, someone who had the credibility to withstand the standard litany of Republican attacks. The ideal candidate would be Southern, because the Democrats were weak in the South; a military veteran (preferably a war hero or retired general) to rebut charges that the Democrats were weak on defense. He needed to be a governor, because senators never win. Someone with a long record of accomplishments. And because the Democrats were always accused of being pointy-headed elites with funny-sounding names, the ideal candidate would obviously be someone who had real "regular guy" appeal and a strong, true blue American name.
You see where I'm going with this, right? After all that daydreaming about the ideal Democratic presidential candidate, the guy who eventually brought the Democrats their most decisive victory was a black, urban, Harvard-educated Northern Senator (and former professor) with no military record, very little experience, and a Muslim-sounding name. It's still pretty hard to believe that happened.
If anything, Obama reinforced Democratic stereotypes. But he won because he was a smart politician, an effective communicator, and he had an inspiring, appealing message. It's funny that in the wake of Obama's political success, Republicans are falling into the same kind of thinking that led many Democrats to be wary of nominating Obama in the first place.
Okay, so what if we could build a candidate? You know, from scratch? As longtime readers should know, I loathe identity politics. But, again, my preferences are irrelevant for this exercise. There are all sorts of obvious problems with this (admittedly hypothetical) recipe for GOP renaissance--the most obvious being that the real Ward Connerly hasn't exactly done wonders in bringing African-Americans over to the GOP--but what really strikes me about Jonah's daydreaming is how closely it resembles the kind of thinking that afflicted Democrats for much of the last three decades.
For starters, I think the ideal Republican candidate just might be Hispanic — and tough on immigration. The way our politics work, you need some kind of authenticity, some kind of membership, to go after sacred cows. Not just in the Nixon to China or Sista Souljah sense, but in the sense that only members of a "special group" can challenge the orthodoxies of the self-appointed (left-wing) leadership of that group. Blacks can challenge racial quotas in ways whites can't. Women can attack feminism in ways men can't. Jews can criticize Israel, Catholics can challenge the Church, gays can question gay marriage, and so on. Yes, they'll still be attacked for their heresy. But the chief weapon — charges of bigotry — is severely blunted when "one of your own" leads the assault. I don't like it, but it is what it is.
So, with that in mind, I think an Hispanic Ward Connerly could do wonders for the GOP. For starters, he could set the immigration debate right in a way that fixes much of the GOP's so-called branding problem. He — or she, though my sense is it would need to be a he — could make it clear that legal immigration is good (though in need of reform) and that illegal immigration undermines not only continued legal immigration, but assimilation. More important, he could allow the GOP to reclaim at least some of the extremely good and noble narrative of immigration as a story of individualism, entrepreneurialism, and patriotic assimilation rather than group victimization. An Hispanic businessman could shake things up in all sorts of ways. He could send the signal that the GOP is still the party of opportunity and self-reliance. He would help with the deteriorating Catholic vote, with the Western states, and even some Eastern urban areas.
But most of all, an Hispanic candidate would help win back Republican moderates. Remember how important Colin Powell and the diversity pageant at the 2000 GOP convention were. It was never the intent to win over huge numbers of black voters. Rather, it was to send the message to soccer moms and the like that it wasn't "racist" to vote for the GOP. An Hispanic candidate could have the same effect. The trick, however, is for the Hispanic to be a conservative who sells conservatism to Hispanics and others, not a Hispanic who tries to convince conservatives that La Raza is basically right and that Republicans need to get over their alleged racism.

A victimization which the national Party's occasional handwaving about "it's only the illegal immigration we hate" has, so far, done little to obscure in the minds of Hispanic voters.
So, what you're saying is that John Kerry wasn't a particularly good politician on the national level?
While I agree mostly with A.L.'s points, I think that extraordinary circumstances were in play in 2008. Hillary Clinton was the establishment Democratic pick and she almost got the nod (but didn't partially because of the also extraordinary conduct of Bill).
Obama aside, who else is an attractive politician these days (R or D)? Dems appear beholden to the money boys, in part since union political power has diminished, and as a result are less courageous on major economic issues.
It amazes me that people are still able to explain the Obama victory without acknowledging the role of plain ordinary competence. We love to think about politics in terms of messages and identity and of course that stuff is powerful and influential but what people really didn't see coming about Obama was his extraordinary ability to accomplish concrete action. That is also what is striking about the Pantload's imaginings - a complete lack of focus on actual ability. Roves and Penns are everywhere in this world. They fill the world with useless noise. Look closely enough though, and you will see the Plouffes quietly changing it.
One thing that Democrats have learned - I hope - from the 2004 campaign is that this kind of thinking rarely works out. Aside from not being Southern or a governor, John Kerry was in many ways the kind of candidate A.L. describes, and look what happened - he still got smeared as being a coward, a traitor, a cut-and-runner, etc.
I think, as Bill Keane said, we should forget about crafting the ideal biography and instead focus on choosing the most competent, effective candidate. Obama was an extraordinarily effective campaigner with an amazing organization, and that's what delivered him the election more than anything else. If the Republicans knew what they were doing, they'd learn from his lesson and concentrate on finding a candidate who can actually deliver a platform that the rest of America likes. With the party in its current state, I realize, that's a tall order.
ultimately the american people are like windsocks; they will go wherever the wind blows. i will not diminish the obama campaign at all, but you have to admit that bush and the right fucked things up so bad that people rejected the right.
that being said: let another major terrorist attack happen on american soil and i can assure you that the right will be back in power.
I love Obama - as a run of the mill cynical Dem I am somewhat surprised I say this -
Obama's relentless excellence is inspiring.
Barring a foreign calamity - he will go one a political ass kicking spree for 8 years.
The GOP has no idea -- no idea - what hit them.
Also - have you noticed, Obama is getting better and better all the time as a communicator and leader.
It's almost scary - a right wing friend of mine in the army was freaked out by the emotional rock star greeting Obama got by the troops - He tried to dismiss it as a black thing (a la Byron York's racist analysis) etc. But he conceded it was more than that -
It's somehow perfectly apt that the Doughy Pantload would seize upon class-betrayal and self-loathing (anti-immigrant Hispanic, anti-feminist woman etc.) as the ideal, defining characteristic for Republican leadership. Given the large numbers required to vote against their best interests in order for Republicans to succeed, a putative candidate's willingness to embrace self-and-class sabotage probably seems more worthy than anything so prosaic as intelligence, integrity or competence.
Good insight about Republicans falling into the same fantasy candidate trap that Democrats were in before.
Anyone who is acceptable to the Republican base will not be acceptable to a growing majority of Americans. Reaganomics failed in dramatic fashion and nobody wants to live under the kind of narrow rules that theocratic social conservatives would impose. Add that to a renewed interest in the importance of competent governance and respect for human and civil rights and you have a true conundrum for Republicans. An anti-immigrant Hispanic is not going to get it done for them ... ni modo ni manera ni de vaina.
Smart analysis, AL, except that this kind of Republican day-dreaming for a Prince Charming candidate predates Obama. Remember the Fred Thompson boomlet? One could argue that Republican fantasy-candidacy delusions predate the Democrat's variety. I'd say it goes back at least as far as Nixon's man-crush on John Connally.
What's new here is that Goldberg's Republican dreamboat has brown skin and is in the proud tradition of Colin Powell. I'm dying to see how THAT plays out with the ditto-head tea-baggers.
I think the commenter who mentioned Bush screwing things up was on the right track. I'm pretty sure the Dems could've run my 2 year old son and defeated anyone the GOP had to offer. I'm not trying to diminish Obama's ability to gin up support, his base is what it is, but the 2008 election was lost by the right, not won by the left. Look at all the congressional seats that keep falling away from the GOP. That is 100% George Bush's doing/the neocon movement's doing. The people spoke, and they are fed up with the right. They were mad that the people they voted into office in droves in 1994 had not lived up to the promises they made. From '94 until '00 it was "we can't accomplish this with a democrat in the white house" and after '00 they just plain ignored the ideas that voted them in to power.
Disclaimer, I'm a recovering former GOP'er, who's now a libertarian. I can't support either party because they are both intent on forcing their agenda on me, I just want to be free. I want my neighbors to be free, I want all people to be free as they can be without infringing on my personal liberties. If you want to marry someone of your sex, cool. If you want the freedom to question everything the federal government does, cool. If you want to get together with your buddies and hate the US, cool. If you want to shoot drugs, cool. As long as you aren't infringing on me, you are fine with me.
i am happy to see the republicans now becoming "liberterians", and this attitude of freedom (especially in our bedrooms and our bodies) is healthy, imo. now, the only issue with liberterianism (which i have great sympathy for) is the idea that we allow "the invisible hand" of the market to regulate itself....this obviously doesnt work.
business do not want more regulations for the same reason criminals dont want more cops on the street.

Libertarian (n): A Republican who likes to smoke dope.
I'm happy to elaborate on that, Tom.
A liberal is someone who cares about the freedom of others, while a libertarian only cares about his own freedom. And it's always a "he".
So, if the Republicans become libertarians... well, what's new, exactly?

Repubs like Goldgerb are clueless about how normal people think, so I hope the repubs follow his advice. Like a candidate made of body parts. Reminds me of my idiot-teenager self: "the ideal girl would consists of XX's face, YY's legs, and ZZ's figure". Quite juvenile.
