The Palin Bubble in Real Time
It's easy to forget now, but for a brief time in early September, conservatives were positively giddy about their prospects in this election. That period of time is probably best characterized, in retrospect, as the "Palin Bubble" phase of the election. And no one better represented that brief burst of enthusiasm than our very own frequent commenter, Virginia Conservative. So, for posterity's sake, I give you the complete tick-tock of the Palin Bubble phase of the election, as documented by Virginia Conservative in the comment section of this blog. It's downright hilarious.
8/29/08
9:58 AM -- It is Palin. Brave, game changing pick! I love it. That should step on Obama's bounce.
11:55 AM -- Obama was coming up in the polls. Now, BAM! Cut right off! This makes Biden look like the boring, uninspired choice he is.
12:42 PM -- Don't discount the possibility of men flocking to McCain/Palin because she is so attractive.
3:40 PM -- The base is loving it. The base is mobilized, and it will defeat Obama-Biden. This pick shows Biden for the boring, uninspired pick he is while nabbing Hillary supporters (especially the blue collar white working class women).
5:02 PM -- It also brings in LOTS of Hillary supporters. The head of PUMA was just on MSNBC and said what a great pick it was, and how it outs Howard Dean and Barack Obama as sexists who stole the nomination from Hillary. The scab of your primary has been ripped off just when you thought it was gone. Have fun with that!
5:22 PM -- I bet you McCain/Palin is at at least 50% middle of next week. The best you can hope for now is a tie.
8/30/08
9:55 AM -- THe base will win this election for us, just like they did in 2000 and 2004. As I said everyone in the WRWC loves her--pro lifers, evangelicals, Mel Gibson-type Catholics, home schoolers, pro-gun NRA members, libertarians, fiscal cons, social cons, EVERYONE. The right wing is fired up and ready to go now! And yes she is ready to be Commander-in-Chief, and you wouldn't even ask that if she was Sam Palin.
8/31/08
9:51 AM -- You guys need to wake up. They were raving about Palin on Meet The Press. The media and base loves her. One of the best picks ever.
10:14 AM -- Palin is the best qualified candidate in terms of winning this election for John McCain. Pawlenty would have been boring and yawn inducing. Palin electrified that country over the weekend.
10:29 AM -- She is more compelling because she is charismatic, a hockey mom, has a great personal story, and will connect with female Reagan Democrats in a way Pawlenty wouldn't. She's a female Mike Huckabee.
11:01 AM -- She is a working class hockey mom with a great personal story and photogenic family that will appeal to working class suburban women in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Colorado, and New Hampshire.
12:16 PM -- Well she sure stopped Obama's convention "bounce" it its tracks. Your boy still can't reach 50% despite four days of non stop Democrat propaganda. Pathetic. Palin is more qualified than Obama. She has executive experience--you know, preparing a budget and being the chief administrator of a government. As Rush said, Palin=babies, guns, and Jesus in the minds of many swing voters. Nobama!
9/3/08
3:34 PM -- The backlash against the media is just beginning and will not only include conservatives, but moderate Republican and independent women, as well as rural voters.
5:32 PM -- Sit back and watch tonight, libs. You're going to be blown away when she gives the speech of a lifetime. Everyone will forget the propaganda from the elite liberal MSM and the smears from Daily Kostic once she hits one out of the park with a dynamic speech!
10:02 PM -- Well she is ripping your Messiah a new one right now. You underestimated her, admit it.
10:38 PM -- I can't wait for her to debate Joey Hairplugs.
11:49 PM -- You libs must be pretty damn scared after that speech. She will clean Biden's clock in the debates. Shes a pit bull with lipstick!
9/4/08
12:03 AM -- It will be all tied up next week again. How can the Democrats lose? Yet that's exactly what you're doing. Tied in the polls next week (within margin of error), the election is just as close as 2000 and 2004.
12:58 PM -- The response from the Obama campaign was weak. What a bunch of wimps, afraid to hit back. "The meanie Republicans are picking on me! HELP!"
2:16 PM -- BTW, thirty seven MILLION people watched her last night, nearly as many as The One last Friday. Hows that feel, libs?
2:47 PM -- The liberal left is clearly in panic. No, I don't care if she is called a rock star. Because unlike Obama shes one of us, from the heartland. Not some arrogant intellectual from Harvard. We're gonna get a huge bump next week from the 37 million, even the elite MSM is eating crow now and admitting that.
2:56 PM -- Norah O'Donnell says "the champagne corks are popping on the right" after last nights speech!
10:12 PM -- "McCain will be ahead in the polls next week. People see a winner."-Chris Matthews. Have fun watching the Obama bump go down to nothing!
9/5/08
11:55 AM -- Palin has sky high favorability ratings now, even among DEMOCRATS. Game over, libs. McCain made a hail mary pass, and the pass completed. Game over.
12:56 PM -- ABC/Wapo poll. Look it up, just saw it on cable. You guys seriously underestimated Palin. McCain is McGenius now.
1:09 PM -- Also, Rasmussen shows the same thing. The headline? "Palin more popular than Obama".
4:42 PM -- By picking Palin McCain is now McGenius! I'd like to see Obama or Biden field dress a moose!
9/6/08
12:07 PM -- McCain up in both tracking polls today. Silly libs, you should have picked Hillary. :)
2:12 PM -- When Obama loses the election, will you blame it on Rove or Diebold?
3:01 PM -- Obama just screwed up big time! Had his Macaca Moment.
9/7/08
7:45 AM -- Twelve point surge for McCain, now up by +10! So when do you guys dump Biden and replace him with Hillary?
Sadly, that was the last comment Virginia Conservative left here. It's a pity the bubble-popping phase wasn't as amply documented.

This made me laugh. Kind of mean perhaps, he's just a troll, but still funny.
After a while I started to *like* VC - he was so reliably enthusiastic for an obviously lost cause. I think with a little more good information (and willingness to find it) he'd be a real asset. I'd welcome his reappearance!
I *don't* feel that way about your other troll, who really was a troll. SteveIL was obviously smart, but used that smarts to trash and contort the truth. I had no respect at all for his vomitous pseudo-intelligent pronouncements.
Thanks for posting. Good one.
A.L.,
Before there was V.C., we had neutral.
Neutral -- last seen arguing that the US economy was not in recession, oh no! -- and Hillary will unquestionably be the nominee of the Democrats!
I sincerely hope neutral is well, and his absence is an indication of a learning process. Ditto for V.C.
Hang on conservatives, we are all in for the ride of our lives over the next decade, economically, politically, and socially -- and it's going to be especially hard on people who don't cope gracefully with change.
Ohhh I laughed. I laughed some more. Priceless.
What's in that RED Kool-Aid???
I almost choked with laughter!
Thanks for that, lol.
Thanks AL. I guess you could find similar comments scattered throughtout NRO's The Corner, or in various Weekly Standard essays, but that would not have the overall coherence of a single viewpoint that VC provides.
I wish there were more comments to document, especially for the last two weeks prior to the election.
Ah, the sleepless nights, the picking over the polls for a glimmer of hope, the sharing of fears and worries on blogs, the tons of useless advice to Obama, the flashes of nervous anger and recriminations ..... the weeks after the Republican convention were the storm centre of the election campaign .... oh, nostalgia!
It started to fall apart for the GOP around the time that Virginia Conservative assumed a stoic silence. Around that time, I also knew it was going to be ok when Obama appeared relaxed and jokng on The Dave Letterman Show.
A picture did the rounds of a stern looking Obama with the caption "Chill the f**k out. I GOT this". True, too.
The spin of the Republicans is that the Lehman Bros collapse on the 14th sent their poll numbers tanking. In my recollection, there was already a growing feeling of confidence on our side that Obama was back in the lead before then.
As much as his calm and measured response to the financial meltdown, Obama's coolness and grace under pressure in the major crisis of his campaign proved his fitness for the Presidency.

The same thing happened all over the progressive blogosphere. From late August- Mid-September, there were Virginia Conservative-types swarming the comment sections, with a chest-beating, Mission Accomplished style premature triumphalism. After months of denying the polls had any predictive merit, overnight they all became poll-loving, ardent psephologists. Then, crash, bang, down went Lehman Brothers, followed by the Dow, and suddenly there wasn't a hubris-fuelled troll to be found, anywhere in left-blogistan. They vanished.
They retreated, en masse, to the Corner & the company of their fellow freepers, in cringing denial and gathering dread, condemning the conservative Palin critics as traitors, gulping down any scrap of hope that Rove or Dick Morris could throw them.
The Virginia Consrvatives will be back, with new names but the same old tired ideas, earnestly concern-trolling the Obama administration, waiting with the patience of cockroaches and the solace of certitude, for the new dawn of divisive idiocy.
So she's still a topic!? I hoped this would have had an end with Obamas 'historical' victory!
for what it's worth, I always felt that VC was a woman, not a man, and that she had a GIANT crush on A.L.
A loss.
Heh, I thought VC was probably a woman too. But I knew a girl named Virginia who was a conservative. So that's probly where that came from...
darn, I was looking forward to the entirety of gravity's rainbow.
the deflation of right-wing egos would be in full swing (one would think), but now i am hearing a new front calling the failing economy "the obama recession"
Only a complete and utter moron (most republicans) would think Palin is qualified for anything. She's a dolt. This was made perfectly clear the moment she stepped away from a teleprompter.
Anyone who pretends to talk to a wider audience that presumably includes those who favor the Dems, but who at the same time uses the word "Democrat" as a proper adjective instead of the correct "Democratic," might as well hang a big sign around themselves saying "I am an asshole."
"Don't discount the possibility of men flocking to McCain/Palin because she is so attractive."
Sheesh this is astonishingly stupid, sexist, vapid nonsense.
The thought that Hillary's women would vote for a skirt is rational compared to this. Any male stupid enough to vote with his genitals is also likely to be a complete misogynist and - by definition - not a vote for Palin.
(Don't bring up Thatcher. Not the same thing, she was smart and could out think and out-persuade just about anyone in her cabinet and had a couple of decades of solid political experience behind her)
Mrs Thatcher joke:
Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet are at dinner. The waiter speaks to the Prime Minister:
"Madam Prime Minister, what is your order?"
"Why, roast beef, of course."
"And the vegetables ...?"
"Oh, they'll just have what I'm having....!"
VC used to inhabit fivethirtyeight.com for a while (considerably longer there than here). He eventually started his own blog, which may explain his absence from other regions of the blogosphere.
I lost the link and a recent purge of my internet history records means I no longer have the link. but it shouldn't be too hard to find (If I feel less lazy thanI do now I might do it) if someone wants to look for it.
FWIW, here is VC's site - it's mainly structured around commentary on Nate Silver's fivethirtyeight.com site, but there is other stuff as well.
Alas! What a letdown. I was so excited to follow his comments into October. Are you sure he didn't just change his comment name? Oh well, back to work.
"She is a working class hockey mom with a great personal story and photogenic family that will appeal to working class suburban women in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Colorado, and New Hampshire."
All states which McCain lost. :-)
