A Fishy Anecdote

Via Isaac Chotiner at TNR, here's an anecdote from the Newsweek behind-the-scenes election series:
The day of the third debate, Palin refused to go onstage with New Hampshire GOP Sen. John Sununu and Jeb Bradley, a New Hampshire congressman running for the Senate, because they were pro-choice and because Bradley opposed drilling in Alaska. The McCain campaign ordered her onstage at the next campaign stop, but she refused to acknowledge the two Republican candidates standing behind her.
Can you spot some problems with this story? For starters, Jeb Bradley was a candidate for the House, not the Senate. But more importantly, John Sununu is not pro-choice. He has a 0% rating from NARAL and a 100% rating from the NRLC.

I'm also not sure I buy the premise of the story. From what I've seen, Palin is hyper-ambitious and anxious to build bridges, not burn them. Why would she gratuitously insult two Republican politicians, particularly two influential New Hampshire Republicans? And if she's such an abortion doctrinaire why would she appear with people like Rudy Giuliani and repeatedly praise Hillary Clinton? And Jeb Bradley is not the only person who opposes drilling in ANWR. So does John McCain.

I'm not saying this anecdote is necessarily false, but it definitely needs to be explained a little better.

I find myself not believing many of the recent anti-Palin stories that have been "leaked".

Palin may have been misinformed, and believed that Sununu was pro-choice. If this was the case, she is the kind of person who wouldn't need to double-check the facts, but would immediately go into "attack mode", e.g. not appearing on-stage with Sununu.

I'm skeptical too, given what you point out. That said, i think the only bridge Sarah Palin is interested in building (ironic we're talking about bridge building) is to the rabid base of the Republican Party. And given the mentality of that hard core base, what better way to do it than to refuse to appear with someone who's pro choice?

Is this story as unbelievable as Obama being a socialist Muslim? How about Iraq having WMD or ties to 9/11?
