An Unmitigated Liability
Watching Sarah Palin on SNL last night, it was hard not to reflect on the absurdity of her candidacy. In the opening skit, Palin (played by Tina Fey) was giving her first press conference, something that has yet to happen in real life. At the end of the skit, Palin herself came out and replaced Fey on the stage. She turned to the camera and said "no, I'm not going to take any of your questions" and then delivered the show's famous tagline opening: "live from New York it's Saturday night!"
It would be funny if it weren't so scary. This is the person John McCain chose to be his replacement if he were to die or become incapacitated in office. We're now just over two weeks from the election, and she has yet to give a press conference. She has not yet appeared on a single one of the Sunday news shows. To date, she has only sat down for two legitimate interviews, both of which she badly bombed. In her one debate, she openly refused to answer the questions that were put to her by the moderator.
This woman is a joke. She is an insult to the intelligence of every single American (many of whom--judging by the attendance at her rallies--clearly deserve the insult). She is also, despite what the Pat Buchanans of the world say, an unmitigated liability to the McCain campaign. She is costing him the support and respect of nearly every self-respecting conservative intellectual. Scores of reliably conservative newspapers are endorsing the Democratic ticket for the first time, and most of them are citing Palin as one of the chief reasons. Palin is also polling horribly among everyone outside of the conservative cocoon (i.e., the 25% who still think Bush is doing a heckuva job).
As far as the surrogate role goes, she is also a major liability. In order to keep from embarrassing herself and the campaign, she has to be kept away from the press. That prevents her from doing the interview circuit like most running mates. She can't even be trusted to do the Leno/Letterman type appearances. All she can do is make campaign stops in what should be safely red parts of the country where angry, fringy Republicans show up and make embarrassing outbursts.

But she's galvanizing the Republican base, right? That's helping McCain, right? I'm sure that's true to some extent. But remember, it's not as if Palin is the only person in the world who could have excited the Republican base. Imagine if McCain has chosen someone like Bobby Jindal. Jindal would have excited the GOP base every bit as much as Palin, but he would have had much more cross-over appeal. And while inexperienced, he comes across approximately a million times more intelligent, competent, and qualified than Palin. No one on the Republican side would have been embarrassed to support a McCain/Jindal ticket. The Peggy Noonans and David Brookses of the world would be singing his praises, not distancing themselves.
So Palin really brings nothing to the ticket that others wouldn't have brought more effectively. She is an albatross around McCain's neck, one that he richly deserves.

Jindal is not a possibility if the planned endgame is to attack the opponent's skin pigmentation and ethnic-sounding name. And that, of course, is John McCain's planned endgame.
In retrospect, John McCain sacrificed his campaign in the interests of having a successful convention. It was a gamble that came up snake-eyes.
How will the longer-term view of Palin pan out? Will she be set for a run at the Presidency in 2012? Mike Huckabee would probably blow her away - doesn't he now have a show on Fox?
Huckabee is quite a witty and warm character, far more attractive than Palin. But will a candidate from the Christianist right be what the GOP wants/ needs in 2012?
At the moment, with the economic cycle promising a recovery in 2010-2012, President Obama (touch wood that it comes to pass) will make mincemeat of either.
Given Palin's new national profile, she might manage another term as Governor of Alaska, but there may be people there sharpening their knives too.
According to a story from the NYT over the weekend, many of Palin's most ardent admirers are men who are sexually attracted to her.
Also championing Palin are women who are dazzled by Palin's Walmart diaper purchases, or her deft juggling of Trig and her campaign responsibilities.
When George Wallace, before the assassination attempt that ended his presidential aspirations, married attractive divorcee Cornelia Ellis Snively, he confided to a reporter that he would make Cornelia the "Redneck Jackie Kennedy". Wallace never delivered on his promise of course, but John McCain has taken up a similar challenge with Palin. Results remain to be seen.
Maybe Palin was a more attractive running mate to McCain because the vetting process actually did reveal her abuses of power while Governor of Alaska. (Hints of Spiro Agnew.)
McCain may have believed he could stifle any investigations until after the election and then ask for her resignation when the inevitable happens. Thus freeing up the vice presidency for Lieberman, Graham or somebody else he really wanted all along.

Jindal went to Harvard, didn't he?
How can run against intellectualism with a
Harvard degree that
was earned (unlike Bush and others)?
Buchanan likes her because he knows that she is a "fellow traveler" in
secessionist circles.
Pat alludes to the secessionist movement a lot.
Also - he knows McCain will lose.
Plus - Buchanan always fetishizes the 'Deliverance' -types that Palin attracts.
He has this vision of us vs. them and he deludes himself into thinking he, Pat, is also a rural peon.
"She is costing him the support and respect of nearly every self-respecting conservative intellectual."
and nearly every self-respecting intelligent woman...
"She can't even be trusted to do the Leno/Letterman type appearances. "
I don't understand the inclusion of Letterman, here, who asks tougher questions than journalists at press conferences...
The simplest explanation is probably the correct one. McCain and the other old men chose Palin because they sincerely believed that women would vote for another woman regardless of her qualifications. They were genuinely surprised that "the masses" aren't as dumb as they had convinced themselves.
I think we've reached the point where any politician, or pundit, is simply GUARANTEED to harm their own reputations if they do NOT come out and say openly that Sarah Palin is not qualified to be Vice President. This goes far, far beyond "liberal versus conservative" or "Republican versus Democrat". When a potential President is SUCCESSFUL in avoiding the media, the USA is in uncharted territory. It is really time for more politicians and pundits to speak up.
An article by Jane Mayer in an upcoming issue of the New Yorker claims that McCain wanted Liberman (aka Bushfeld in my home) but his advisers told him that if he picks Holy Joe he WON'T win but if he picks Palin he MAY win. So, the maverick didn't exactly put country first.
Regarding Jindal he is an unapologetic creationist and that didn't take Huckabee very far.
- Bob
Jindal's "creationism" is different in form and content than Huckabees "Creationism."
