Historical Voting Patterns

This Google map of historical voting patterns is pretty interesting:

It's fascinating to see how the red/blue breakdown of the states has changed over the years.

For instance, Obama could end up winning a number of states that Bob Dole won in 1996--Colorado, Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana--and he's close in several other Dole states (North Dakota, Georgia, Montana).

Also, in 1988, Michael Dukakas lost what are now safely blue states like California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, and Vermont, but he won seemingly more difficult states like West Virginia, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

And Jimmy Carter, in his 1980 blowout loss to Reagan, also managed to win West Virginia. It was one of the few states he won. Strange.

As the map turns...

West Virginia was been a safe blue state for a long time, until this decade. I'm surprised Obama is even competitive there.

California used to be a moderate Republican state, until the party shot itself in the foot with the anti-immigration Prop 189 in the early 1990s. After Hispanic voters went Dem, it was pretty much over. Nowadays, you can't even get elected as Republican statewide...moderate candidates never make it out of the primary. (Arnold made it only because the 2003 recall was an open race) In just a couple of days, CA might be the first state where Same-Sex marriage is approved by a statewide vote.

In more good news...Gallup Traditional LV is up to Obama +8. Looks like the infomercial was a good investment...

You want to look at political maps?

#1 1948 3rd party dixiecrats takes votes from "southern Democrats Good ol' boy Strom breaks south from total blue, to blue and Strom.

#2 1968 THE ELECTION that changed 100 years of history. South hates Republicans because of that schmuck Lincoln in 1860. Dems "ruled" the south, because this is where the KKK and other racists continued their "civil war" with blacks. 1965 was the year the civil rights act was passed, and the election of 1968 was the first post civil rights presidential election. The southern Dems were pissed, and starting going over to the "other side" when Nixon was the first of many Repug candidates to blow the dog whistle loud and long. The racist Dems of the pre 1965 civil rights act became the racist Repugs we see today.

Pre 1968 south 90% + dems electoral votes

Post 1968 south 90% + Repug electoral votes.

Ah, where have most of the southern racists gone....
