And The Winner Is...
Congratulations to Elizabeth Dole. She has put out the slimiest, most defamatory political ad that I've ever seen. I really wonder if that doesn't cross some legal threshold. It should. And if there is a God, Dole will lose this election very badly.

I think this may even be more defamatory than the infamous ad Saxby Chambliss ran against Max Cleland in 2002. Hopefully they will both lose their elections this year...
Dole is apparently unable to appreciate the irony of her willingness to invoke God in a dishonest political ad.
The Bible describes such behavior as taking the Lord's name in vain.
In fact, it might cross the line into blasphemy.
As a Bible-believing Christian, I am much more trusting of an honest atheist than I am a religious liar.
I live in NC and the campaign has indeed turned ugly here. The latest Dole ad is yet another complete Republican lie. Dole is behind by at least five points. I feel confident she will lose.
What I can't figure out, though, is why we keep getting so many virulent (and dishonest) anti-union robocalls. I have not heard of that going on elsewhere.
Reading about this election makes me thankful that I live in a true blue state and am thus spared from the incessant advertising and robocalls.
This is just like saying Obama is Muslim. It's factually inaccurate, but shouldn't the whole point be that it isn't an insult point out someone is an atheist or Muslim to begin with? Did the repubs not get Colin Powell's Meet the Press memo about disparaging large groups of the population? Especially given that Atheists/non-affiliated are the second largest "religious group" behind Catholics?
Not sure if it's the slimiest (Obama teaches sex ed to kids still rings slimier for me), but it's certainly the most overt display of disdain for such a large part of the population...
What about McCain's cannibal link:

I live in a blue state, but this hasn't spared me from right wing ugliness. An Obama/Biden sign was stolen from my front yard a week ago (in my State you have to buy Obama/Biden yard signs at $8 a pop). But I shrugged, told myself that this is just the kind of thing that happens in political campaigns, and promptly put up another sign.
Yesterday, in my mailbox, I received a letter bearing a P.O. cancelled stamp, addressed: "To The Resident at..." followed by my address. A full half page of the missive inside showed a brutalized, partially dismembered full-term baby in full color (obvious signs of lividity on its head and sides, indicated that it had remained in that position for some time after death). Below this, in bold letters was the word "Malachi", followed in slightly smaller script by this:
"Avote (sic) supporting Obama is a vote supporting this kind of slaughter. Don't let the blood of innocents be on your hands!"
Things are getting ugly out there, folks. And I guess we know who's fanning the flames.
"...shouldn't the whole point be that it isn't an insult point out someone is an atheist or Muslim to begin with? "
Yes, in some kind of contextless Platonic world of ideas it definitely should. But in the reality of North Carolina in 2008 that's just not what a lot of voters want to hear, and if it were, you can be sure Elizabeth Dole wouldn't have used it.
On the other hand, what Dole doesn't seem to realize is that people are not reacting as well to lying attempts at fear-mongering as they used to. I'll be amazed if she keeps her seat.
The RNC/GOP is so desparate they are launching manipulative, spiritual, boldface rovian lies......Check out the "God invoking" rovian unjust "w' styled doublespeaking message from Elizabeth Dole regarding Democratic leader Kay Hagan who is an elder in her church and a Sunday School teacher. : the voice at the end made to sound like Hagan is a pretender facade voice: ......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMuQF6groXc&eurl=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/29/dole-ad-fabricates-audio_n_138874.html...........Hagan's response:.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQWgLv7CFVE&eurl=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/29/dole-ad-fabricates-audio_n_138874.html... andf another reponse... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXNQ1VVPWyQ&eurl=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/29/dole-ad-fabricates-audio_n_138874.html
Dole's ad provoked this above-the-fold article in today's News and Observer (local Raleigh paper):
http://www.newsobserver.com/politics/story/1274507.html
Last night one of the local Raleigh tv stations carried a piece that said a bunch of Presbyterian ministers had filed a complaint with Dole demanding that she remove the ad. The piece pointed out that Hagan is a Presbyterian elder and Sunday school teacher. It also said Hagan has sued to get the ad stopped, but that Dole says it is "100% factual" and refuses to take it down. Dole will lose anyway.
