Worst Paragraph Ever
In a rational universe, this single paragraph would be the nail in the coffin of John McCain's candidacy:
Think about what he's saying here. He's praising the deregulation of the banking industry over the last decade, specifically the way it led to a lot of "innovative products." Like mortgage-backed securities? Yep, that's worked out pretty well, Senator. Bang up job. We should definitely bring that same approach to health care.
UPDATE: Then again, if we bring the same approach to health care that we brought to the banking industry, maybe in eight years or so, our health care system will completely collapse and the government will have to step in and take over. Voila! A national health care system. Brilliant.
Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation. That comes from a column in this month's Contingencies magazine. The author: John McCain.

What does it take to get that McCain statement out there so that everybody knows about it?
In a normal universe, that would be devastating. But as far as I can tell, that's not what we're inhabiting.
Of interest, that statement works against McCain on two issues that people are concerned about: financial stability and health coverage.
I'm curious how McCain and his camp will defend it, although I'm sure they won't fess up that they are out-of-step. But what will he and they say?
This amazing quote points out that it's not just "the economy, stupid." It's the entire conservative market-solves-all, competition-fixes-anything, private-is-good, public-is-bad, trickle down philosophy that has damaged America. Voodoo healthcare is no better than voodoo economics.
This is, at best, a poor analogy.
The fact is there is an enormous difference between retail banks, as McCain was talking about here, and the investment banks that are shitting the bed up in NY.
wait i thought mccain was FOR regula--oh wait...your talking about the mccain of yesterday...I forgot his opinions flipflop every damn day.
EN, I agree that it's a poor analogy, but it was McCain who made the analogy. Plus, the most damaging part of his quote was not the part about health care. It was his praising of what "we" have done to deregulate the banking industry and how that allowed for "innovative products."
McCain's health care ideas are incredibly bad policy, but for reasons that are quite distinct from the banking mess.
So sick, it's funny. The shame... ha. found you via FranIAm.
Yes, I read this this morning. He is all over the board. But what can you expect from a man who clearly doesn't get the economy, or much else for that matter. I found ya through Fran, darn her. I cannot keep adding more must read blogs! ROFL.
