To Palinize

Victor Davis Hanson, who long ago squandered any academic reputation he may have had in the pursuit partisan hackery, does a good job of crystallizing why the media's coverage of Sarah Palin is making conservatives so crazy right now. He begins his post with this:
Palinize: to slander and caricature a working-class female public figure for the noble advancement of liberalism.

Sarah Palin—self-made woman, and governor of Alaska—is being reducing by the left to a hickish, white trash mom of five.
Now let's put aside for a moment the fact that no one of any significance on the left is actually criticizing Palin in this way. Hanson's post is nevertheless instructive in this sense; it gets to the heart of what's angering conservatives right now. They're upset because they believe that a conservative politician--one they really like--is getting caricatured and ridiculed unfairly, that she's not being taken seriously enough (never mind that their own pundits are just as guilty of this).

What doesn't occur to Hanson (because he's a partisan hack) is that caricature and ridicule are THE chief weapons in the Republican arsenal. As long as we're coining new verbs, let's throw a few more out there: how about to Kerryize, to Gorize, to Dukakisize, to Carterize. The bottom line is that Republicans win presidential elections by doing exactly what Hanson is complaining about here, i.e., reducing their opponents to simplistic caricatures and objects of ridicule. What does he think McCain was trying to do with those Britney/Paris ads and the constant repetition of the word "celebrity"?

The Republican freakout about Sarah Palin's press coverage (which, let's face it, has been relatively mild and focused almost entirely on her obvious lack of experience), is one of the more breathtaking displays of hypocrisy and hyperbole that I've ever seen. I just hope their whining and tantrum-throwing doesn't scare the media into backing away from their responsibilities.
Digg!

There has been speculation that the whole Palin issue is intended to be a base-energizing exercise... that they're going to keep insisting that she's being abused. They get to play the victim card, the sexism card, and the "those awful, dirty liberals!" card.

I have no opinion on the truth of this, but it strikes me as a possibility.

Here's a tidbit you may not have seen. And I wouldn't consider it a smear against Palin. During her speech last Friday, Palin mentioned that her son would be deployed to Iraq on 9/11/08. According to the piece, it isn't true. I do remember reading that her son enlisted on 9/11 of last year, and that he would deploy soon. So, what was Palin doing announcing the day of her son's deploying, potentially putting his life and the lives of the others in his unit in danger? And would a more experienced candidate avoided this mistake if, in fact, it is a mistake (the poster seems to think so)?

Constructive criticism. From someone who supports Democrats. It sounds credible enough.

noble advancement of liberalism

Um, yeah.

Why is VDH taken seriously by anyone?

A very fair point, AI, but lest we forget that hypocrisy is what the Republicans do best. Well, next to opportunism, arrogance, lies, and a complete and utter detachment from reality.

I forgot to mention cockiness. They do that one pretty well too.

He isn't. The thundering sage of Fresno has any credibility at all only with the 30% or so of Americans on the far right.

I've noticed this too; the only places I hear the phrases "white trash", "hick", "redneck" (that from vc here), are from right-wing commentary "complaining" about the left - all without identifying the source. None of the standard "liberal" blogs I read refer to her that way at least in their posts (don't read all the comments).

It's a weird kind of cynical projection. Do they fear being identified as hicks/rednecks/whatever so much they raise the issue and point the finger before other people even notice?

I don't get it. Let's instead talk about qualifications (which are zero, but that's a different issue).

They've actually got the definition of Palinize all wrong.

Palinize: to knowingly lie, to people whom not only know your lying but are expecting you to.

...You've got to Palinize this resume or you'll never get a job.
