A "Principled" Response
Has a more shameless and cynical political strategy ever been proposed? (h/t Sullivan)
Talk about taking no responsibility. On the GOP's watch, our entire economy has reached the point of collapse and now, rather than own up to the tough decisions that have to be made, they're going to run away and blame the rescue crew. This is the "principled" response? There aren't even words.
Republican incumbents in close races have the easiest vote of their lives coming up this week: No on the Bush-Pelosi Wall Street bailout. This is akin to setting the house on fire and then suing the firefighters who show up to put it out. It's hard to think of a more irresponsible, cynical, soul-crushingly shameless course of action. And that's exactly why I'm pretty sure it's what the GOP will do.
God Himself couldn't have given rank-and-file Republicans a better opportunity to create political space between themselves and the Administration. That's why I want to see 40 Republican No votes in the Senate, and 150+ in the House. If a bailout is to pass, let it be with Democratic votes. Let this be the political establishment (Bush Republicans in the White House + Democrats in Congress) saddling the taxpayers with hundreds of billions in debt (more than the Iraq War, conjured up in a single weekend, and enabled by Pelosi, btw), while principled Republicans say "No" and go to the country with a stinging indictment of the majority in Congress.
This creates pressure on the "change" message. If this issue is made controversial, and Obama is not the first to make it an issue, how exactly is a Washington deal backed by Bush's Treasury Secretary "change?"
But for this to be actionable, it has to be controversial. So this can't be a few lonely voices like Coburn and DeMint. It needs to be the bulk of the Republican conference. In an ideal world, McCain opposes this because of all the Democratic add-ons and shows up to vote Nay while Obama punts. . . .
A bailout may be inevitable, but so to can be the political benefit for Congressional Republicans if played correctly.

McSHAME would rather vote present, than attend the vote. He hasn't attended the Senate since March, why should this week be any different than any other week since March.
I bring up the "Vote Present", bcause McSHAME's hustlers have been saying this all day about Obama. Thechnically, hasn't McSHAME been "voting present( or present by absentee ballot)" since March?
It looks very much like McCain will take Ruffini's advice.
And on PBS last night I watched as McCain's chief of staff told a national audience that it was an indication of McCain's "maverickness" that he didn't respond to the daily roll-call of the Senate Republican caucus, and why he didn't vote with the caucus.
Yup, straight from the horse's mouth: the fact that he doesn't vote at all is an indication of his being a maverick.
By analogy, that would make a maverick not just an unbranded animal, but one that has left to go live with the goats.
