Palin on SNL
In case you missed it, this was the opening skit on SNL last night:
It's remarkable how little the SNL writers had to do. They essentially re-enacted the Couric interview and just added a few comedic flourishes. And it was completely devastating (and hilarious). Palin is, at least for now, well South of Dan Quayle territory. She is a joke.
If there's a silver lining for the McCain campaign, it's that Palin still has one more opportunity to redefine her public image. The expectations for her debate performance this Thursday could not possibly be lower. If she can manage to string together a few coherent thoughts, she'll have surpassed them.
That said, I imagine the McCain campaign is not at all confident that she can clear even that low bar. How could they be after what they've seen so far? I wonder what sort of crisis control plan they have up their sleeve in the event she flames out spectacularly in the debate. I'm sure they'll try something to draw media attention away from the smoldering wreckage, but I'm not sure what. Maybe McCain can challenge Obama to a duel?

"Will the real Sarah Palin please stand up." Put side by side I'd have a 50% chance at best at saying which one was Tina Fey and which was Sarah Palin. The more they talked the more confused I'd be.

I saw this last night.
It is even more funny this morning.
Or, is it more scary?
Thankfully, Fey hasn't tried to copy Palin in a speech to a large crowd yet. I'm sure, if she did so, she would nail the high, piercing voice that sounds like a combination of fighting cats, chain saw, and fingernails on a chalkboard.
I love the duel idea, but I think John Dickerson at Slate did you one better by suggesting that McCain might return to Vietnam and imprison himself... :-P
Actually, after thinking about it some more, this is just starting to get really sad. I feel bad for her.
I realize that she chose this path for herself--that her ambition drove her to accept McCain's invitation to be on the ticket. And she's obviously a skilled politician (to some people), having gone from councilwoman to mayor of a small city to governor in a short time.
But it's really almost unfair what McCain has done to her. It's as if McCain has purposely decided to pluck her from obscurity simply to destroy any chance she'll ever have to run for national office. I mean, she has to feel humiliated right now. And imagine how her family feels! But it's not like any of these SNL skits are unfair...she really is *that* ignorant of national issues and *that* unprepared.
I'd be tempted to believe that she really is intelligent and it's just hard to learn *that much* in three weeks. But she should, at the very least, be able to speak in coherent, English sentences...even if she's not really answering the questions she's being asked...politicians avoid questions all the time, after all.
It's just too bad that Bush-McCain Republicans are so determined to be stubborn and not alter course when reality intrudes...
Have mercy on the woman...send her back to Alaska! And...maybe college...

Palin's opinions are so unformed that no one knows who she would "evolve into" as President. Once she's in the Oval Office, she may not "play ball" with the Republicans who are supporting her right now. We don't even know her medical history, let alone what meds she may be on right now. My point is, even "conservatives" should be worried about Palin, and McCain for that matter. They are both "mavericks". The Republicans are taking quite a gamble with the country!
