The Drama Queen Strikes Again

Good grief. More theatrics from the McCain campaign. Just what America needs.

I really hope the media treats this latest gimmick for what it is, a desperate attempt to capture headlines.

Apparently the Obama campaign reached out privately to the McCain campaign this morning to see if they were interested in issuing a joint statement on the bailout proposal. McCain and his advisers--who were likely prepping for the debate at that point and panicking about the latest poll numbers--decided that they wanted to outdo Obama, and so they hatched this idea. They decided to publicly "suspend" the campaign and demand that Obama to do the same. What a joke. The McCain campaign is run by children. Country first, my arse.

Although I think Obama should remain the adult and continue to act respectfully, his surrogates need to call McCain out for pulling this kind of transparent stunt in the middle of an election. Is McCain really not capable of following the legislative debate in Washington and prepping for a presidential debate at the same time? Is he completely incapable of multi-tasking? And what exactly is he going to do in Washington to help the situation other than inject even more politics into an already delicate set of negotiations? He's not even on the relevant committee.

Obama should respond by stating unequivocally that the debate needs to move forward, that the American people are facing a monumental decision in just over a month and they deserve to see the candidates debate. He should suggest that some or all of the debate focus on the current financial crisis and serve to educate the public about the stakes of the current legislative debate.

Above all, Obama needs to look like the adult here. It shouldn't be hard.

I hate to say it, but it's getting to the point where I'm actually looking forward to a John McCain "dramatic" act.

Sure, at the beginning it discombobulated Democrats (e.g. Palin), but now it seems to be working against him.

Following the "Fire Cox" statement, and today's "suspension" of the campaign, you've got to be curious what else they're going to hatch in the next six weeks.

Actually, the stunt was begun yesterday by Harry Reid, who stated he couldn't get anything passed without McCain's presence (it was interesting he didn't seem to require Obama's presence). So McCain called him on it. Then Reid told McCain to stay on the campaign. I'm not sure the Democrat leadership are acting like adults.

And what does Obama do? He follows McCain.

And, Obama is bringing a bonus; actually, someone who knows how to improperly report expenses to get bonuses as CEO of Fannie Mae, Jim Johnson (I thought Obama dumped this loser; kind of makes one wonder how much Franklin Raines is really involved in the Obama campaign).

Above all, Obama needs to look like the adult here. It shouldn't be hard.

As I mentioned, he doesn't have good teachers with the Democratic leadership in the Senate.

Nice try, Steve. Excellent leadership, in my opinion, in requiring McCain to be on board with the proposed changes. For a few reasons.

1. McCain can rally the Repubs in Congress to work together with the Dems and actually make a difference - true bi-partisanship if you ask me.

2. It also doesn't allow the McCain campaign to set itself up for it's next sleazy move - detaching McCain from the proposed bailout, and then circling right back around to slam the Dems (and thusly, Obama) for "abusing" the taxpayer money "irresponsibly" on an "unnecessary" intervention.

Stevil, at it again. Reid didn't say McCain's PRESENCE and the link you gave DOESN'T SAY THAT you little LIAR.

The truth is, and the link says, that Reid wants McCain behind/backing/supporting the bill, so that (as goodroots says) he can't vote against it and flog the Dems. That doesn't require his physical presence, which (1) wasn't requested by anyone prior to Mc's announcement and (2) helps nothing.

Now Bush has apparently asked them both to come up to talk, and Obama agreed. That's ok with me. McCain isn't scoring a point for that, Obama isn't "following" McCain. I agree with A.L., there is a crisis and we need a bailout bill of some kind (Dodd equity-based version, I hope) really soon.

And your gall to snipe at Obama over Fannie Mae (which sniping has been discredited) after the news came out today of McCain's staff's payments from Fannie Mae right up through August. Who do you think you're dealing with at this blog? You think your lies are swaying opinions of those of us actually plugged in to the news?

Why do you like to lie, Stevil? Does it make you feel proud of yourself?

I think McCain the Drama Queen (King?) strikes again.

We know now what a McCain Presidency would be like. Probably monthly "crises" or "pseudo-events" at which an heroic John McCain would step forward to save his country, along with his Batgirl sidekick .... etc. etc.

Well, this is Thursday and I think it has backfired on McCain ...

- Bush pre-empted his attempt to grab the news cycle with his own speech.
- Obama is firm on the debate going ahead, so he is not seen to be following McCain's lead.
- A deal seems to have been worked out before McCain even gets on the plane.
- The MSM are reporting this reasonably. They are on to McCain's campaign stunts, and the story of his attempt to hijack a bipartisan approach by Obama is getting out.

If this was a effort to reverse his slide down the polls, I think it has failed.

My apologies, you are correct. Here's what Reid said:

We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do.

So, Reid demanded leadership from McCain, yet didn't demand equal leadership from the candidate of his own party. And then he asks McCain what the Senate should do? What the hell kind of statement is that from the Senate Majority Leader?

As far as the rest, Reid telling McCain to go back on the trail (which he didn't do), Obama following McCain in returning to D.C. after President Bush asked him to, and the Obama campaign conferring with Fannie Mae ex-CEO Jim Johnson, that is accurate.

That was Freddie Mac, not Fannie Mae (and no, I won't call you a LIAR, since this was simply a mistake on your part). And what discredited sniping are you referring to? Johnson was involved in Fannie's creative accounting to garner $20 million in bonuses for himself (read the report I linked to earlier), and got a sweetheart loan from Countrywide (a "friends of Angelo" loan), a helluva lot more money than Davis Manafort received from Freddie these last three years.
