The Boehner-Bot Speaks

As I've noted before, to truly understand the depths of cynicism and hypocrisy to which some politicians are willing plunge, you have to spend some time listening to Republican members of the House of Representatives. As dishonest as McCain and Palin are, the House GOP leadership is much, much worse. They will literally say anything.

Here, for example, is what House Minority Leader John Boehner had to say about today's financial turmoil:

“All across America, families are struggling with the fallout from the turmoil in the housing and financial markets — another sign that the destructive tax-and-spend economic policies promoted by this Democratic Congress are failing to meet the needs of workers, seniors and small businesses,” Boehner said in a statement Monday afternoon.

“Going forward, we need to restore confidence in the financial markets and get our economy moving again — not by growing the size of the federal government, but by stopping the Democrats’ job-killing tax hike, cutting wasteful Washington spending, reforming oversight of the markets, and unshackling American energy resources to help lower gas prices and create new good-paying American jobs.”
There you go. The current financial crisis is a result of "the destructive tax-and-spend economic policies promoted by this Democratic Congress." Nevermind that Boehner and his buddies controlled Congress with an iron fist for 12 out of the last 14 years. And even during the last two, a Republican president has vetoed anything and everything he didn't like. Nevermind that there haven't been any tax increases of any kind since 1993 (and that one was followed by an unprecedented economic boom). Nevermind that government spending increased exponentially during the time the Republicans controlled Congress (and the White House). And most of all, nevermind the fact that the GOP's habit of outsourcing the task of legislating to industry lobbyists is directly responsible for the regulatory conditions that produced the current crisis.

None of these things matter in the bizarro world in which the House GOP leadership inhabits. Now Boehner and his pals are champions for the little guy, fighting against "wasteful spending" and imaginary tax hikes that never happened. Sometimes I wonder whether Boehner (like Tom Delay before him) is some kind of soulless Republican android controlled remotely by operatives at the RNC. It really wouldn't surprise me if that were true.
Digg!

Never mind that the last tax increase in 1993 actually hurt the already ailing economy, and was brought back to life by the Republicans beginning in 1995 with their spending cuts. Who, unfortunately, forgot the spending cut part by 2006.

Also, never mind that in opposition to Boehner, every Democrat, including and especially Barack Obama, blames all this on Republicans. Go figure.

As opposed to the bizarro world of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, those responsible lightworkers of Congress.

You know, if one were to look at things objectively, members of both parties pretty much suck. They drag we the little people into these meaningless diatribes of "Democrats are evil, Republicans are good" and "Democrats are good, Republicans are evil", while we continue re-electing the same tired old politicians. And it goes on every two years and four years. They politicians live "high on the hog" while we go through another round of mindless banter. Who is really living in "bizarro" world"?

Bottom line - the Greedy Old Party - has stacked the regulatory agencies with "loyal Bushies" and cronies and those who have ties to the industry they're supposed to regulate. They've made the agencies of government into Public Relations Firms for the industries they came from. Now we see the results of this and they want to blame it on a Democratic Congress who has YET to be in control - thanks to needing 60 votes to overcome a filibuster in the Senate or a veto of a Republican President. It's simple - the American people are stupid as to the workings of the government and Boehner and his Republican cronies are BANKING on that.
