Time to Hit Back Much Harder
This new McCain ad warrants a much tougher response than the one the Obama campaign issued. It's hard to imagine a more dishonest or hypocritical ad. Not only does McCain blatantly lie about Obama's position on taxes (saying he'll raise taxes on those making over $42,000), but the set up to that claim is just breathtakingly hypocritical. The narrator intones: "Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough." The rest of us? Really? From a guy who owns eight homes, runs up six figure credit card bills every month, and wears $520 imported calfskin loafers? Yeah, times are real tough.
McCain can't be allowed to get away with this kind of stuff. He's a very rich man with very rich tastes whose economic plan consists primarily of giving even more tax breaks to the wealthy. And his opponent is someone who grew up in a broken, lower-middle class home, put himself through school, is still far-less wealthy than McCain, and supports policies that would shift the tax burden away from lower and middle class Americans and toward the very wealthy.
It's not enough to indignantly point out that McCain is lying. This kind of up-is-down advertisement warrants an outraged and hard-hitting response.
And while they're at it, perhaps the Obama campaign can release a few ads of its own so that the news cycle everyday doesn't consist of news programs playing the latest McCain smear over and over again and asking whether it's "fair." The Obama campaign needs to learn how to control the news cycle a little better.
Chuck Schumer has the right idea.

The Obama camp has been so reluctant to hit back at the McCain ads, and while staying above mudslinging is a noble thing to attempt in American politics, I think the time has come for SOME sort of measured response at least!
I believe Barack is letting McCainiac get his shots in, responding with the truth (but, yes, tepid) in ads and statements. Let him sling his sh!t, spend the GOP's money, but in a few weeks, the convention is here and over and we have a ticket -- and then Obama takes out the big guns. I think, anyway. He's not afraid to mock these creeps -- and it's been awhile since we've had a democrat who could (effectively) do that.
It's been more than a month than this post but it's a shame that the Obama campaign still has no clue how to hit back smartly. A few tips for that can be found at www.hitbackharder.com.
