John McCain: A Steady Hand on the Tiller

"The events of the last few days show that there are many places in the world where we don't necessarily anticipate this kind of conflicts breaking out. And it does require a steady hand on the tiller and an experienced one."

-John McCain, speaking to a crowd in Michigan today

"The thought of [McCain] being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

-Senator Thad Cochran (R-Mississippi), January 27, 2008

"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerilla group here at this end of the table and I don't know what attracted my attention, but I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever. I don't know what he was telling him but I thought, good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission. I don't know what had happened to provoke John but he obviously got mad at the guy and he just reached over there and snatched him."

-Senator Thad Cochran, (R-Mississippi), June 30, 2008

"I decided I didn't want this guy [McCain] anywhere near a trigger."

-Anonymous Republican Senator, speaking to NEWSWEEK, describing an incident in which McCain erupted into a profanity-laced tirade directed at his colleague, Republican Pete Domenici.

"[McCain] slammed his fist to the table and stood up and said this meeting is over. Then he pointed his finger at me and started calling me names. His staff was pulling him back, trying to get him to sit down."

-Phoenix City Councilwoman Kathy Dubs, describing McCain's behavior at a meeting

"F*ck you! I know more about this than anyone in the room!"

-John McCain, screaming at Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) at a committee meeting last year.

"I'm calling you a f*cking jerk!"

-John McCain, screaming at Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) at a committee meeting.

A steady hand indeed.
Digg!

I've never understood why the Obama campaign doesn't play up this aspect of McCain. It worked for Johnson against Goldwater (whom McCain reminds me of). It worked to head off Bolton's confirmation. Americans don't like angry people--they're afraid of them and they think they're a little nutty. It just needs to be done tactfully to show that not only is he a hothead but he's a little loopy. Plus it reminds people of Bush and Cheney--macho hotheads. Run an "is he read y to lead?" ad recounting these incidents with the line, "but don't just take it from us, listen to what members of his own party say..." and end with the Cochran quote.

There you go, playing the rage card from the bottom of the deck.

And, yes, it did take me all day to think that up.

the other upside of such a tack is that it WOULD clearly and evidently piss McCain off.

McCain lacks the temperament and psychological stability to be President. He's someone who grew older but never grew up. His finger should not be on the nuclear trigger under any circumstances.
