Bill Clinton's Selfish Myopia

It pains me greatly to write this post because--despite his many faults--I have long been an admirer of Bill Clinton. He's a man with enormous political talents, and I think he has used those talents over the years to advance progressive notions of justice and equality in a significant way. And I think his commitment to these ideals is genuine and deeply held.

Which is why it is so disillusioning to see him engaged in what is obviously an attempt to marginalize his wife's chief rival as "the black candidate." Just today, he was trying to spin away Obama's overwhelming victory in South Carolina by going out of his way to compare Obama to Jesse Jackson. There has clearly been an attempt by the Clinton campaign over the last week or so, led chiefly by Bill Clinton, to dismiss Obama's success in South Carolina as being all about race. The goal has been to transport us back in time 20 years, to turn what had begun as an almost post-racial election into a replay of 1988. As Clinton knows, if Americans come to see Obama as the candidate of African-Americans--like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson in prior presidential races--his support among whites, hispanics, and other ethnic groups will plummet.

If this strategy is successful, it will all but ensure that Hillary Clinton wins the nomination. In that sense, it's smart and crafty politics. But it will only accomplish this at the expense of progressive ideals and the well-being of the country generally. It will take a moment in history that could have marked a huge step forward for the country and turn it into a huge step backward. It will take a moment that could have gone a long way toward smoothing over long-simmering racial tensions and instead only further inflame them.

Clinton is sullying his reputation, harming the Democratic coalition, and setting back race relations in this country, and he's doing all of this solely to advance his wife's near-term political prospects. It's as if he's become so focused on winning this primary battle that he's completely lost sight of all larger considerations.

In this sense, Bill Clinton reminds me of Colonel Nicholson, Alec Guinness's memorable character in The Bridge On the River Kwai. Nicholson, a British POW in a Japanese camp in Burma during World War II, becomes so obsessed with his appointed task of building a bridge over the Kwai River that he completely loses sight of whose side he's on and what he's spent his life fighting for. When a team of British soldiers is sent to blow up the bridge, he actually tries to thwart their efforts, coming to his senses only in the final scene of the movie where he exclaims, with his last breath, "What have I done?"

I sincerely hope that Obama is able to overcome the Clintons' cynical and destructive attempts to marginalize his impressive victory today and make this a campaign about race. If he's not, Bill Clinton may one day have to grapple with the reality that he personally set back a lot of the goals he'd spent his life fighting for, all in a myopic attempt to get his wife elected president.

Bill won't succeed. I feel very sorry for him because I used to like him. I don't anymore after what he's done. All the time he was president and since then I have not allowed myself to acknowledge his slimy side, because I thought he cared about us. Now in the last few weeks it has become abundantly clear that he doesn't.. He is so jealous of what Obama is doing that he feels determined to kill it. He and Obama aspired to alot of the same ideals, if you re-read his 1992 speeches. But Obama really seems to mean it and is building the organization needed to make it happen.

History will record FDR, JFK, Reagan and Obama as the ones who changed the dynamic in American politics. Bill is losing his legendary historical position. His legacy probably won't mean much in the long run. That is what has him on edge. It's all about his ego.

Fuck Bill Clinton.

There's a saying, that the difference between a great naval commander and a good one is about 10 minutes.

Non Democrats have known everything you said in your blog entry since 1992 when Bill Clinton had Blumenthal slag Bush 41's WW2 combat record.

So, if 10 minutes is the difference between good and great, where does that put Clinton supporters, who weren't able to see the reality of the Clintons for the past decade and a half?

You might think what you wrote was new or interesting, but a better description would be blinding flash of the obvious.

I think you missed the point of AL's story. Bill Clinton is the brave warrior who is so focused on achieving the immediate goal that he loses sight of the ultimate objective.

So, the Bridge to the 21st Century becomes the Bridge Over The River Kwai - I like it.

However, Clinton-boosters and Times-bashers can point to this - the Times had a long piece exploring the many parallels between Jackson 1984 and Obama 2008 a couple of days before Bill delivered his gem - were they also race-baiting?

I say they were - the media can't get over how high-minded they are for taking a black candidate seriously.

I do not like or approve of what Bill is doing, but I fear it's nothing compared to what we'll see from the R's in the general election. They'll bombard us with everything from Willie Horton style ads to the trash they threw at Harold Ford, and worse. So if you think Bill's actions might hand Hillary the nomination what makes you think the same reasoning will not apply if the R's do it in the general? Bill has very little shame, but the R's have none whatsoever. That's sort of the whole point in this debate about electability: even if Bill (wisely) shuts up, the R's never will ... and they won't just bait and hint, they will outright attack, slime, and lie.

Bill has kept this up because they thought it would work and he clearly got under Obama's skin and rattled him. I think S. Carolina proved it doesn't work so now Obama needs to stay tough, focused, and remain in his game plan. In the general election the color of his skin won't matter nearly as much as the thickness of it.

Meanwhile, another democratic dynasty family member has chipped in, a Kennedy. Frank Rich has a piece worth reading also, in NYT.

How do those who wish to portray Obama as simply "the latest black presidential candidate" explain Iowa? New Hampshire? Obama has healthy and respectable (and potentially unbeatable) appeal across race and gender categories.

Finally, there needs to be an examination of the SC results. Not from exit polls, which were even further off the mark than in NH, but from the hard numbers. Obama did huge numbers among black voters, with obvious implications in re: "the solid south", and a national Dem. strategy.

Bill Clinton's comments may have ugly racial overtones, but it seems they only reflect an equally ugly reality. The vast majority of black voters in SC voted for Obama; the vast majority of white voters in SC voted for either Clinton or Edwards. As a nation, we are still polarized by tribal loyalties.

10:27 AM
Anonymous Casual Observer said...

Not so fast, anonymous. I didn't want to do this, but will, with apologies to AL.

Here's a breakdown of the white vote in SC, based on exit polls:

Obama---Clinton---Edwards
...24........36..........40

If the three candidates had absolutely evenly split the white vote, it would be 33.3% across the board. Obama missed that by 9%. Edwards was over by 7%. Clinton slightly above as well.

Is there a racial component to the race? Sure. Why would this election be any different from every other presidential election we've ever had?

But the trend here is a significant break from that sad tradition, and not only SC, but Iowa and NH show that trend very clearly. Rather than bemoaning polarization, I see great hope in these numbers.

First time I've ever seen Bill Clinton described as a "brave warrior"--that's a hot one.

I'm certainly no "progressive," but I've never seen Bill Clinton as one either. Remember, this is the guy who flew home to Arkansas in the heat of the 1992 campaign to ratify the decision to execute a badly retarded young black kid. And he gave us NAFTA and welfare reform, for both of which I applaud him--but again, I'm no progressive. (NAFTA, of course, was a GHW Bush initiative in the first instance.)

Rather than a progressive, I have always seen him as a dangerously narcissistic opportunist, and with his every utterance he confirms that assessment in my mind. His comment about Jesse Jackson's performance in 1984 and 1988, in response to a question that had nothing to do with race or with Jackson, might as well have been "they all look alike."

The left has long turned a blind eye to substantial evidence of outright criminality on the part of both of the Clintons, and maybe the scales are now dropping. (Remeber Juanita Broaddrick? Anybody doubt her story? Remember, if she's telling the truth, Bill Clinton forcibly raped her when he was Attorney General of Arkansas.) I've seen suggestions that the 100+ redacted pages of the Barrett Report contain descriptions of wholesale use of the IRS to punish political enemies. We're talking Nixonian here.

Remember, Hillary Clinton personally superintended teams of private investigators whose sole purpose was to discover dirt on, and to bully and intimidate, women whose stories might have damaged her husband's ambitions. You want her in charge of the FBI and the CIA?

It's comical to hear fears expressed that "Oh, the Republicans are the ones who are really going to sling the mud." If she's the nominee, she's got a lot of mud coming her way that is very richly deserved, as many Democrats are now begrudginly beginning to realize.

I believe both Barack Obama and John McCain are honorable men, and though I prefer the latter's politics, I think the country would be well served to have either of them as president. Just close your eyes and try to imagine what a Hillary Clinton presidency would be like.

I took your advice and did close my eyes after reading your post. I visualized, unbidden, a strange thing. It was an iron pipe, sticking out of a riverbank and over a flowing stream. Out of it was oozing a noxious substance, so poisonous that even flies wouldn't land on it. The toxic goop dripped from the pipe, fouling the waters below.

What I find bizarre (other than the sudden popularity of the DLC on the netroots) is the fact that so many people online who normally quite insightful can't see that this is the tactic being employed by the Clinton campaign and has been for a while now. If they can't I'm sure that many in the general population can't either. That's bad for Obama of course.

Good post.

The problem with decrying the Clintons for attempting to tar Obama as the black candidate is that the voters of South Carolina just went ahead and did exactly that. Obama didn’t pull nearly the entire African-America vote because of his policy positions, he did it because of his skin color. I know that in progressive circles we’re not supposed to mention such things, and we trot out the notion that Obama is somehow a post-racial candidate whenever possible, but clearly that wasn’t the case in South Carolina. So long as Obama draws 80-90% of the black vote-which is highly likely (let’s put aside for the moment the question of whether it was historically justified or not)-I can’t get worked up over Bill or Hillary drawing attention to that fact, crudely or otherwise. They’re trying to win an election and they’re going to pull out all the stops, as they should. There seems to be some sort of unstated assumption among the pro-Obama crowd that everyone needs to get out of the way because Transcendence has arrived. It manages to be both insulting and ludicrous at the same time.

As someone who doesn’t really have a horse in this race (Al Gore would be my preference, and I’m voting for John Edwards on Feb 5), I neither approve of nor am swayed by the tactics of the Clintons. But my lack of approval has to do with the world that I wished I lived in rather than the one I do live in. I’m sure Hillary and Bill would prefer to run a campaign that trumpets the close ties they have historically had with the African-American electorate, but seeing as that electorate looks fully prepared to turn their back on Hillary en masse because she happens to be running against a (shudder) black candidate, then they’ve got to take a different tack. It is what it is.

"Obama didn’t pull nearly the entire African-America vote because of his policy positions, he did it because of his skin color. "

Except of course if that were the case then he would have been leading with the black vote the second he got in the race. But he wasn't so that doesn't make sense.

It's interesting to note that when white candidates get white votes it's not perceived to be because of the color of their skin...

j, I'm with Bill Maher on this one. He said months ago that when the chips were down, the black vote was going to come home to Obama in a very major way. It was entirely predictable. The only question was whether black women would identify with their gender or their race and South Carolina basically answered that question.

And I'm not sure I would agree with your assertion about the white vote, either. It's not an issue in Iowa or New Hampshire, certainly, but as soon as the primaries hit states with more varied demographics, you instantly started seeing breakdowns of the Latino vote, of the black vote, and of the working class and middle class white vote.

(And if you wanted to paraphrase Chris Matthews, you could certainly say that 2/3rds of white voters voted against Barack Obama in South Carolina.)

Blogger J said...

The chips were down? You mean when HRC Inc. played racist dogwhistle politics? Seems to be a matter of placing the cart before the horse.

Otherwise the chips were never down. Obama was ahead in delegates.

My point about white voters is that it's never looked at as bad or about race when whites vote for whites.

I guess you think black women are more black than they are women eh?

You've said some really amusingly offensive things and I doubt you even realize it.

Farrapo -- Exactly. Obama mustn't lose his cool or get cocky. This is the fight of his political life -- until the general election (if he makes it that far).

That's why I was really encouraged to see his messaging is evolving very well:

"I don't think [the Clintons] were trying to demonize me, but I do think that there is a certain brand of politics that we've become accustomed to, and that the Republican Party had perfected and was often directed against the Clintons, but that all of us had become complicit in, where we basically think anything is fair game," he said.

He also reiterated that the "slash-and-burn politics" that exists in Washington today "is not the Clintons' fault. It is all of our faults, in the sense that we've gotten into these bad habits and we can't seem to have disagreements without being disagreeable. So part of what I think we have to do is to set a new tone in politics. Not a naive one."

The meme here is that the Clintons are addicted to the "bad habits" of attack dog politics (Take that, Bob Johnson). First, they're infantilized as victims of the Republicans, then they're a symbol of what we need to rise above. Always, they are pathological, to be dealt with more in sorrow than in anger. Brilliant stuff.

If this guy ever does become president, his writings will be pored over and admired for years to come.

Plum ... agreed! Obama's post-SC win speech was terrific and answered a lot of my concerns. It's exactly what he needed to do - stay on the high ground, point out what's wrong with the opposition's low approach (managing to ding both HC and the R's), and keep up the energy level. I've been for Edwards, but on the fence as to which of the other two I'd go for if/when Edwards is out. The events of last week pushed me more toward Obama, so I guess you could say I'm a case in point for what was wrong with Bill's divisive attacks.

Did Mattews say that? What a maroon. It was not 2/3rds, but 3/4rs that voted against Obama. 2/3rds of the white folks voted against Clinton. Can't the guy add? But, to be fair, over half of the white people voted against Edwards.

This just proves that the white folks in SC are so racist that they won't even vote for white people.

Prior to President Clinton's annoying comments concerning Sen Obama, i was amused by Hillary's surrogates coming out of the sewer to chuck stones for her. Sending old "Negro" friends like Bob "My network shows more bootyshaking and less news" Johnson of BET and Andy" I'm so senile I'm saying anything these days" Young out to attack Barack was comical. What Hillary didn'tknow is that most Black people hate Bob Johnson and his jigaboo network. Also.. we stopped listening to Andy Young when significant amounts of black georgians voted for Zell Miller instead of Andy who was over his head as Mayor of Atlanta.
If you want a movie analogy try one from Gordon Parks classic "The Learning Tree". When the main character realizes that his invitation to a scholarship dinner is in fact a trip to a boxing ring to fight multiple other black boys for the amusement of the White male townsfolk.. the main character looks at his nemesis in the ring and questions why? His nemesis responds by bloodying his nose. Senator Obama may wonder why.. but we know that the Andy Youngs and John lewis' and Bob Johnson's are bought and sold to the Clintons. Whats also compelling is the idea that what Mssrs Young and Johnson have to say even matters to young african-americans.. or perhaps that was for whites? Ummmm???

The very good news is, this is by no means the "fight of Obama's political life." He's going to be around for a very long time, and I believe that at some point he is going to be elected president.

It is, however, very much the fight of the Clintons' political life, and it is a very ugly thing to see. When your long-time strategists and consiglieri are the likes of Carville, Begala and Sidney Blumenthal, it can only be a matter of time before the picture of Dorian Gray comes into focus. What other, past lies have they told, and how have those lies harmed the nation? What other innocents have been eviscerated and left to twist in the wind by their breathtakingly amoral and boundless ambition?

Here's another query for you: how, exactly, have the Clintons helped the Democratic Party? That party had held the House for over forty years until that narcissist took the helm, and the Senate for most of that time. How were they doing when he left office? And despite all of that, at his exit they very nearly swooned in their adoration of him.

To read the likes of Joe Klein, Frank Rich, and assorted folks at the Nation express their shock--shock!--at the sudden discovery that this is a vicious, unprincipled, remorseless and mendacious pair of obscenely dysfunctional and ambitious yuppies is a great joy to behold. Welcome to the club.

Let's keep a sense of perspective here. While we may be disappointed in Bill Clinton's statements, they may or may not have any effect on the election. I suspect they will not have any great effect, because Obama is likely to simply rise above it.

We should expect the politicians we are expected to vote for to have a higher ethical standard, but -- it isn't the first time Bill has disappointed.

Still, it's not like he lied to put the nation into a needless war, or damaged the intelligence network, or ran the army into the ground, or tortured people.

j,

I'm happy to entertain. For my part, I find it amusingly offensive that in the same campaign cycle when some very real calls to racism were on display in the form of Mike Huckabee's defense of the confederate flag, the focus of the media is instead on the racial divisions being wrought between the wife of a man who was labeled "the first black president" and, potentially, the first black president. There are no grounds in Bill or Hillary's legislative history to even begin to suggest that they are racists, and there are many grounds for thinking just the opposite. And, not coincidentally, I think it's you who have put the cart before the horse. I suspect that the Clintons looked at the internal polling and knew that the black vote was going to break heavily for Obama, which is what has forced them into this strategy. I'm sure they would rather not campaign this way, but at the end of the day you do what you need to do to get elected. It's a lesson that other Democratic candidates should learn.

Incidentally, I'm not making any value judgments on black voters casting ballots for Obama because they are excited to have a black candidate, any more than I disapprove of women voting for Hillary. The historical inequities of the country make those decisions entirely understandable, particularly when you are dealing with two qualified candidates with very similar platforms. But that doesn't mean that we should collectively pretend that those impulses aren't being exercised or that it's not what is really going on.

"Still, it's not like he lied to put the nation into a needless war, or damaged the intelligence network, or ran the army into the ground, or tortured people."

Actually, concerning the "lies," there's not a single statment made by Bush about Saddam's WMD and his intentions that wasn't made by Clinton himself. As for damaging the intelliegence network, are you quite sure of that? As for running the Army into the ground, he did absolutely, precisely that, and it was left to the current administration to resurrect it. Ask any military professional about that.

And he didn't "torture people?" Really? Why don't you look into the history of extraordinary renditions, and let us know what you think about it. Would you bet your savings that no one was waterboarded by the CIA while Clinton was president?

A good lesson here: If you've been low trash all your life, you'll always be low trash.

Questions?

Have you had enough of petitions, rallies, and protests that have not worked? The Republican party and their conservative members appears insulated from the public and unresponsive to the public. However their contributors do not appear insulated from the public and can collapse under pressure to a withering telephone campaign threatening mass boycotts of their products until they get their friends at the GOP to do what we want.

Would you and your organization consider joining these telephone campaigns and spreading the word to your membership, and fellow progressive groups in your newsletter? I have created these campaigns to peacefully take back America. After you have made these phone calls please send me email to info@democratz.org with the subject CALLED.

I'm voting for Obama in the general if he's the candidate. Despite the fact that his supporters have basically told baby boomers to STFU and get out of the way.

However, what I find amusing is all this talk of Clintons' race baiting. I bet not one of you were spit on in 1964 for being a teenage white girl working in a civil rights rally. I am very conscious of so-called codes. Bob Johnston is an idiot. The drug stuff was stupid. But if you think talking about the realities of how the Civil Rights legislation got passed is racist, then I have to believe you root for an uninformed populace, devoid of any grasp of history or its meaning. It was obvious what Hillary Clinton was saying....that it takes various kinds of people and work to make change.

(Should any of you thinking folks care to delve into that theory, I give you the unification of Italy.

Much of what was said has been taken completely out of context, as when Clinton was asked about history and black voting in SC and he responded with the Jesse Jackson comments. It brings to mind CNN's removing the crowd noise to give us "the Dean Scream."

Clinton was dumb to have taken that bait. The media loves this race angle like no other. He should have known how it would be used.

People like Joe Scarborough are thrilled by this second chance at impeachment. I am having flashbacks to the days when Republican men spouted on the floor of the House while salivating over Bill Clinton's pants.

Above and beyond that. Barack compared Hillary's White House experience to having "tea parties" and Michelle said, "If you can't look after your own house how can you run the White House."

Not a ripple in the press.

My take-away? Racist--bad! Sexism--heh, heh, wink and a nod.
