Belated Debate Post-Mortem
Let me start out by saying that the current "controversy" being hyped by Michelle Malkin and her outrage brigade over the political allegiances of some of the YouTube questioners is self-evidently stupid. If the questions themselves were somehow grossly unfair or loaded or the questioners were giving shout-outs to various Democratic campaigns, that would be one thing. But they clearly weren't. The questions were perfectly fair and reasonable and were echoed by many of the other 5000+ YouTube questions that weren't selected. It's not at all surprising that among the people who care enough to record and submit a debate question, many will be politically active and have allied with themselves with someone's campaign, even (gasp!) a Democratic campaign. And only a small fraction of the 30 or so questioners who appeared during the debate are even alleged to be affiliated with Democrats. Is there some rule that says that Republicans can only be asked questions by fellow Republicans? Is CNN supposed to conduct an investigation of every questioner? If anything, Democratic questioners will be more objective. They have no dog in the race. I would think the real concern from a fairness standpoint would be having questions asked by undisclosed supporters of a particular Republican candidate.
With the exception of the idiotic song at the beginning, I thought the debate format was pretty good and far more entertaining than most debates. It was far more informative and discussion-provoking than the debates where some pretentious gasbag like Chris Matthews or Tim Russert moderates. If only Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter's invitations had been lost in the mail, it might have been ideal.
As for the candidates themselves, I stand by my previous contention that Mike Huckabee is being significantly underestimated. I thought he mopped the floor with his opponents. He was the only guy out there (with the possible exception of John McCain) who didn't come across as an angry yahoo 90% of the time. He comes across as thoughtful, optimistic, and reasonable, and as someone who has genuinely-held beliefs. By contrast, Mitt Romney comes across as someone who has completely out-sourced all thought to some sort of RNC-designed computer program.
From what I can tell, the conventional wisdom about Huckabee seems to range from a belief that he can win Iowa but not the nomination to a belief that he can win the nomination but would get creamed in the general election.
As I explained in my previous post, I think he has a perfectly plausible path to the nomination (at least as plausible as Rudy's), but more than that, I think Huckabee would be a formidable general election candidate, potentially stronger than anyone else in the Republican field. Though he's very conservative on social issues, he has a way of coming across in a very nonthreatening way. He's also more of a populist on other domestic issues than the typical Republican and has not wedded himself to Bush's foreign policy like his opponents have. That would give him a lot more room to maneuver in a general election. Combine that with the fact that he's an excellent orator and an unrelenting optimistic and I think any Democratic candidate would have his/her hands full.
Conventional wisdom also seems to hold that Rudy Giuliani would be the strongest GOP candidate in a general election. I think that's mistaken as well. Giuliani could potentially be a strong general election candidate, but he's also a risky one for the Republicans. First, there's a real risk that if he's the candidate, the religious right conservative base would choose to sit this election out or support some third party alternative. Moreover, Giuliani strikes me as being the candidate most likely to suffer a scandal or gaffe-induced meltdown. Giuliani's personal life is a disaster and his years as mayor appear to be an un-mined treasure trove of scandal fodder. And temperamentally, Giuliani is prone to bizarre tirades and otherwise juvenile outbursts (see, for example, this embarrassing display). He often seems more like a baseball manager than a politician.
If the idea is to nominate someone with a proven track record of success in blue parts of the country, Mitt Romney is a much safer bet. He's better looking, more polished, has a model family and a squeaky clean history. Yes, he's been shamelessly pandering to the Republican base for the last year or so (though only slightly moreso than Giuliani), but I think he would turn on a dime and start looking more like the old Mitt if he managed to win the nomination. And Romney's ace in the hole is the Massachusetts health plan. Though it doesn't do him much good in the GOP primary, it would likely feature prominently in a Romney general election campaign and might effectively inoculate him from criticism on that issue (given that the Massachusetts plan is very similar to those proposed by the leading Democratic candidates).
I also think McCain, if he could somehow manage to win the nomination, would be a formidable general election candidate. Ditto for Fred Thompson (though his chances of winning the nomination seem even smaller than McCain's at this point). In other words, it is FAR from clear to me that Rudy is the most "electable" Republican in the field. I'd personally rank him 3rd or 4th.
Back to the debate, I was struck by the look on McCain's face during the entire immigration discussion. He looked like somehow who was completely embarrassed by what his party had become. Tancredo was right; they were all trying to out-Tancredo him. How embarrassing. I also couldn't believe that Mitt Romney chose to attack Huckabee for his eminently reasonable point that we shouldn't punish children because of their parent's actions. To me, that point in the debate signified the complete abdication by Romney of any attempt to analyze issues in terms of his own personal beliefs. I am certain that Romney the person and even Romney the politician up until last year would have agreed with Huckabee. But Romney the RNC automaton was the only person on that stage. And so he chose to attack Huckabee and seemed completely oblivious to the fact that this made him look like an angry tribalist yahoo.
McCain seemed much more reasonable than his opponents until the topic turned to foreign policy, at which point he devolved into a hawkish demagogue, shamelessly asserting that he was speaking on behalf of the troops when criticizing Ron Paul (who, by the way, gets far more campaign contributions from active military members than anyone else on the stage) and offering the standard right-wing revisionist tripe about the Vietnam war (we only lost because of the dirty hippies at home!).
Overall, I thought the debate was pretty informative and far more entertaining than usual, and I think Mike Huckabee came away as the clear winner.

Is it just me or does Romney use a tanning bed? His tan is always perfect and he cannot have time to sit out in the sun or go to the beach while on the campaign trail.
After all the balderdash about Edwards' haircuts, it would be interesting to know.
It doesn't make him a poor candidate, but it does say tons about vanity if he does.
I agree. The Republicans are crazy if they think they want Giuliani for a candidate. The hope for the Dems would be that Giuliani's Republican opponents obey Reagan and play nice with Giuliani, let him win, then come general election time, the Dems can unpack his skeletons pretty much on a daily basis. And provoke him into tirades, and if that doesn't work, just publicly post four different photos of him dressed up as a woman - not hard to find - and he'll be toast.
Which is also why I wish the liberal blogs would stop hissy-fitting that Giuliani's scandals aren't being treated with the proper amount of attention or gravity. Let them wait, I say. Good seed will keep.
A.L., your topic post is so long that I've only read the first few paragraphs, and now must go nap.
But Al (may I call you Al? It's so much easier than alternating between caps and lower-case, and putting in those meddlesome periods that only us old folks care about), would it matter to your analysis if the questioners and the audience were held out to the public as "undecided Republican voters" when we now know that they were not? Would you perhaps call that "fraudulent?"
And let us suppose that the Democratic candidates had had the courage to appear on Fox News Channel for a debate (a stretch, I concede; they didn't have two balls among them) and it were revealed that six of the 34 questioners selected had verifiable ties to Republican candidates? Can you imagine what you, your very own bad self, would be saying today? I sure can imagine it, and it ain't pretty.
More on this target-rich subject in the fullness of time. Right now. slumberland beckons.
neutral,
We don't have to imagine some hypothetical reverse scenario. There was a Democratic YouTube debate. I bet a few of the selected questions were from Republicans (I remember some of being "gotcha" type questions). No one flipped out.
And if CNN represented that all of the YouTube questions were from undecided Republican voters, I must have missed it. Is that true? Seems like a weird thing for them to say.
Since the panelists -- not just the questions -- at the canceled Nevada debate would have been chosen by Fox News, it seems certain that if only 6/34 of the panelists were GOP shills somebody would get Rupert Murdoch's boot up their rear.
So let's see: Neutral thinks that, when you randomly sample from a population who are willing to get up in public and ask questions in a public forum, that 6/34 of them turn out to be active Democrats is a scandal. But if the panelists are hand-picked by Rupert Murdoch or his agents, then it's great.
This is an exceptionally fine example of RWA compartmentalized thinking. Not only is Neutral not willing to allow CNN the benefit of the doubt, he is willing to give Fox News carte blanche under the same circumstances.
Not that I expect Neutral, even awake, to be able to see that.
"I bet a few of the selected questions were from Republicans."
You "bet?" In the Magnificent Seven, Steve McQueen famously said, "we deal in lead, friend." Here (I thought), we deal in evidence.
My understanding was that the audience was represented to be undecided Republican voters. But I don't really have any idea, and if I'm wrong then it's not the first time.
I don't much care if the questions are challenging--I would prefer that they be exactly that--but I would hope that they not be preposterously silly or downright stupid. Here, CNN failed quite horribly--it was disgraceful.
And were the Democrats in the CNN debate asked any hard questions about abortion? Was Hillary asked about cattle futures? About her husband's chronic lying? John Edwards about tort reform? How do those two feel about having accepted huge donations from confessed felon and ambulance-chaser Bill Lerach (whose imminent frog-march will set me to dancing the Eagle Rock up and down my spacious trophy room)?
Maybe such questions were indeed asked; if so, please let me know. I only watch the highlights, and there are very few of them.
Neutral, the audience was Republican, but no one ever said the YouTube questions were all submitted by Republicans. They were just questions submitted online. How the hell would CNN know who the people are.
And I'm not sure what you think was "preposterous" or "disgraceful" about the questions. Of the ones supposedly asked by Democrats, one was from a gay veteran asking about don't-ask-don't-tell. One was a perfectly reasonable question about abortion. Another was about reaching out to the Muslim world. And one was about the national debt. They weren't "gotcha" questions. There was nothing unfair or loaded about them.
As for the Dem debate, no one knows the political alliegance of the questioners because we didn't have someone like Michelle Malkin digging around and harassing all the questioners.
I did watch that debate though, and I can tell you that many of the questions were difficult and put the candidates on the spot about issues like gay marriage and reparation for slavery. They weren't softballs. It would not surprise in the slightest if some of them were posed by Republicans.
About Rudy: I lived in NYC for 20 years, including all of his mayoralty. He is bound to implode: he can't keep up the facade of reasonableness and sanity over a very long campaign season.
Not to mention all the scandals.
A.L.--
Completely agree that if the candidates can't take hostile questions, irrespective of the party affiliation of the questioner, then they have no business being candidates and they're all in for a rude shock in the general. Of course, the only people whining are their blogo-proxies, which is bad enough, but not as stupid as if the candidates themselves were being pissy about it. If the poodle-with-'roid-rage that is Michelle Malkin would just shut up, the world would be a better place.
I confess that I missed the first 10-15 minutes of the debate, which was where most of the sound bites come from, and I came away thinking that Giuliani did great. When he answers questions--even when pandering shamelessly--he does it with concision and authority. Romney can't quite convince you he believes anything he's saying and comes off looking like a taller version of John Kerry, with slightly better hair.
The sound bites did indeed make everybody look bad except for Huckabee. Hmmm, who edits the sound bites? And who has a vested interest in making both primary seasons newsworthy and good television?
Agree that the chance for the Giuliani equivalent of bimbo eruptions and various other scandal-worthy events is quite high. But I still disagree with you about Huckabee. He might wind up being popular with the base but the money guys are all, well, money guys. Big government, redistributive protectionism plays very poorly with that crowd.
As for McCain, it ain't gonna happen and if it did, you'd only get a good race if the aw-screw-it insurgent McCain showed up, instead of the oh-crap-I'm-a-frontrunner McCain.
Bottom line is the GOP is probably toast, which will benefit nobody (see previous thread).
From CNN:
"This debate is to let Republican voters pick from among their eight candidates," said David Bohrman, Washington bureau chief and senior vice president for CNN. "We are trying to focus mostly on questions where there are differences among these candidates."
Anyway, Captain Ed and others have made the pont that eventually Republicans need to be able to address the entire nation.
However, the outrage is directed at CNN. Try to keep in mind that on the right, CNN is viewed as the evil twin of Fox.
So the Anon Lib's rejoinder that CNN didn't stack the deck at the Dem debate does not exactly resonate - righties expected CNN to ambush the Republicans, not the Dems.
As to the notion that there may have been Republican questioners at the Dem debate but no one noticed or would have cared - please, give yourselves a little credit. If someone involved with the Giuliani campaign snuck in a question for Hillary, I am confident that Media Matters and Atrios would have noticed.

From the transcript, the only point I can see to having the Hillary person ask about gays in the military was to embarrass Romney with his quote from 1994. None of the candidates differ on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and I do not have the impression it is a hot topic amongst Republican voters.
From the transcript:
MR. COOPER: Governor Romney, you said in 1994 that you looked forward to the day when gays and lesbians could serve, and I quote, "openly and honestly" in our nation's military. Do you stand by that?
MR. ROMNEY: This isn't that time. This is not that time. We're in a middle of a war. The people who have watched --
MR. COOPER: Do you look forward to that time, though, one day?
MR. ROMNEY: I'm going to listen to the people who run the military to see what the circumstances are like. And my view is that at this stage this is not the time for us to make that kind of a change.
MR. COOPER: Is there a change in your position from 1994?
MR. ROMNEY: Yeah, I didn't think it would work. I didn't think "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" would work. That was my -- I didn't think that would work. I thought that was a policy -- when I heard about it, I laughed. I said that doesn't make any sense to me. And you know what? It's been there now for what, 15 years? Seems to have worked.
MR. COOPER: So just on clear -- at this point, do you still look forward to a day when gays can serve openly in the military, or no longer?
MR. ROMNEY: I look forward to hearing from the military exactly what they believe is the right way to have the right kind of cohesion and support in our -- in our troops, and I'll listen to what they have to say. (Boos.)
MR. COOPER: All right.
General Kerr is, as I said, is here. Please stand up, General. Thank you very much for being with us. Do you feel you got an answer to your question?
GEN. KERR: With all due respect, I did not get an answer from the candidates. (Applause.)
Still Tom Maguire
'Don't ask, don't tell' may not be a hot topic for all Republicans, but might some Log Cabin Republicans be interested? Larry Craig? Ken Mehlman? Or is it true that, like Iran, there are no homosexuals in the Republican party?
Let's game this out for a moment. If the debate was of Republicans, by Republicans, and for Republicans, then hostile questions would hardly have any effect on the audience, save maybe to firm up support for candidates under fire. In other words, a win for the party.
If the debate was in fact targeted at a bipartisan audience, then the candidates had a duty to field hostile questions--which, to their credit, they did. So what's the big deal?
The only thing that seems even slightly hinky is that it appears that the Democrats got straight Democratic questioners, while the GOP got a mixed bag. Does CNN have to account for this inconsistency? Yeah, they probably should. But otherwise, this is pretty small potatoes. It all seems like GOP base voter rabble-rousing.
I don't really see why this is a big deal. Sounds like CNN screwed up, but if the questions were fair and reasonable, what's the big deal?
I don't think that either side has any room to talk about stacking audiences. Certainly the Republicans don't.
I understand why 'Don't ask, don't tell' transcript excerpt represents an obvious Democratic planted question. I think it's a question a true Republican would ask to prevent someone with liberal tendencies from gaining the Republican nomination. Note the boos in the transcript. I think it was a softball question and Romney didn't even swing.
I also don't understand why Romney was so evasive regarding a non-controversial Republican issue. Had he responded with something like 'I think gays in the military should be transferred to Gitmo and waterboarded', he might have been forced to accept the nomination at the debate.
Sorry, make that DON'T understand why that's an obvious Democratic planted question.
'Don't ask, don't tell' may not be a hot topic for all Republicans, but might some Log Cabin Republicans be interested?
Well sure, then CNN should have used a question submitted by a Log Cabin Republican.
Since they chose to go with a question submitted by a Hillary person, that sort of undermines the notion of broad Republican interest in the topic.
I [don't] understand why 'Don't ask, don't tell' transcript excerpt represents an obvious Democratic planted question.
Well, its not just that the question is NOGI to Republican; it is that the questioner was, in fact, a Hillary supporter. And Mr. Cooper was apparently itching to ask Romney about the 1994 quote.
For my money, I agree that both parties are likely to field a stronger candidate if they tackle the awkward issues early. However, Dems are boycotting Fox, and Reps had concerns going in about whether CNN could really be, well, fair and balanced. And they weren't.
So, does it help the Reps to take on the tough questions *and* expose CNN as tilting left? Sure. But that doesn't mean CNN doesn't tilt left.
This recent Harvard study on media bias found just that, by the way. I am extracting the tilts for Fox and CNN:L
Democrats on Fox: 24% Positive; 39% Neutral; 37% Negative
Republicans on Fox: 32% Positive; 47% Neutral; 21% Negative
Democrats on CNN: 28% Positive; 49% Neutral; 23% Negative
Republicans on CNN: 14% Positive; 46% Neutral; 41% Negative
I think one could argue from those numbers that CNN tilts further towards Dems than Fox tilts towards Reps.
As a caveat, the study also notes that the CNN result is driven by a pro-Obama tilt; the other Dems apparently get even treatment.
So people have a problem when Republicans squawk about a pro-Dem network engaging in pro-Dem behavior even after they said they wouldn't? Interesting. Does it mean I won't see Fox criticized by the left anymore? O am holding my breath...

Al, when I spoke of trivial and preposterous questions, I was talking about crap like "do you believe every word in the Bible," or "what do you think of the Confederate flag."
But no matter. Because my belief in the ability of Republicans to commit suicide knows no bounds, I think you may actually be right about Huckabee having a chance. In which case seppuku looms, not just for the GOP but, of course, for yours truly.
