Kristolicious

It's official. Bill Kristol has devolved into a parody of himself. His endless calls for "seriousness" and shameless disregard for reality used to annoy me greatly. But he has now reached such a level of absurdity that I can't imagine anyone who isn't hopelessly beyond the reach of rational persuasion continues to take him seriously.

His latest column for the Weekly Standard is entitled Keep on Surgin': Bush is beating them back. It's a classic of the genre: delusional, paranoid, totally detached from reality. Kristol, in full "stab in the back" mode, rails against all the Defeatists (the Democrats, the media, the "foreign policy establishment") who are conspiring to grasp defeat out of the jaws of victory. Ever the optimist, however, Kristol suggests that President Bush, through his heroic resolve, has managed to stop the momentum of the Defeatists:
Over the last few weeks, all of these estimable entities--the Democratic party in Congress, much of the media, and the foreign policy establishment--have joined together to try to panic the country, and the Bush administration, into giving up. The story of the past week--an important week--is this: They failed. Many around Bush wobbled. But Bush stood firm. Most Republicans on the Hill stood firm. And, so far as one can tell, the country as a whole pulled back a bit from the irresponsibility of cutting and running.
I love that last bit: "so far as one can tell . . . ." Actually, Bill, one can look at the polls, which provide precisely zero support for this assertion. The American public is overwhelming in favor of withdrawal. This has been the case for some time now, and the size of the majority is increasing every day. Kristol thinks this is just an "assumption," though:
Now, the assumption in the media, and among most in the political world, remains that the Defeatists have the momentum, that Bush is fighting a rearguard action, and that his retreat at home, and U.S. defeat abroad, are basically inevitable.

But what if this week is a harbinger of things to come? What if the Defeatists have overplayed their hand? What if they continue to sound the tocsin of defeat--and the president, and the commanders, and the soldiers, don't snap to and obey? What if the surge continues to show better and better results, and the Bush administration does a more effective job of communicating them? If so, this past week could turn out to have been a pivotal moment in the Iraq war.
Ah yes, that would make this about the 100th "pivotal moment" in Iraq that Kristol has pointed to as evidence that success is just around the corner. Sadly, this time he can't even point to an actual event, like the elections or the capture of Saddam. He can only ask "what if": what if suddenly, and for no apparent reason, the entire trajectory of events in Iraq and at home shifts dramatically and I, Bill Kristol, am vindicated. If that happens, this totally random moment in time will indeed have been "pivotal."

Good grief. How can this man even take himself seriously at this point?

Since I've wasted an entire post talking about Kristol, I can't end it without resurrecting my favorite Bill Kristol quote of all time. This is from his Weekly Standard column published on the eve of the Iraq invasion:
We are tempted to comment, in these last days before the war, on the U.N., and the French, and the Democrats. But the war itself will clarify who was right and who was wrong about weapons of mass destruction. It will reveal the aspirations of the people of Iraq, and expose the truth about Saddam's regime. It will produce whatever effects it will produce on neighboring countries and on the broader war on terror. We would note now that even the threat of war against Saddam seems to be encouraging stirrings toward political reform in Iran and Saudi Arabia, and a measure of cooperation in the war against al Qaeda from other governments in the region. It turns out it really is better to be respected and feared than to be thought to share, with exquisite sensitivity, other people's pain. History and reality are about to weigh in, and we are inclined simply to let them render their verdicts.
Needless to say, history and reality have weighed in, and Kristol and Bush are stubbornly refusing to accept the verdict.

And unlike a jury verdict, history and reality cannot simply be overruled by the stroke of a pen.

For Kristol and the rest of the wingnuts it's all about setting up the stab in the back meme.

These clowns think they can still create their own reality if they just keep at it long enough.

And why shouldn't they? They convinced a bunch of people to vote for Reagan, GHWB and GWB based onthis kind of stupid crap.

WOW! Kristol is all over the place. Wash Post commentary today, your article, and the one I saw in Time magazine. The Time article made me puke. He has the nerve to say things are great. Wonderful economy, da da da, and we are the most powerful military force ever.

Most Powerful Military Force ever:
We can't find the real perpetrators of 9/11 and we can't conquer and control a country the size of California.

Actually, history and reality will not have weighed in until we have elections in 2008. At that time, however, I am convinced we will see Republicans suffer greatly at the hands of the electorate as they did in 2006. You can already see several, formerly staunch supporters, of Bush's Iraq policies begin to waver. They too see very ominous signs among voters about Bush's implacable drive to continue a failed mission regardless of loss of life, financial cost or further loss of national reputation.

I find it very disconcerting to see how this administration continues to deny reality in any number of circumstances. Part of the problem, and perhaps a substantial part of the problem, lies in the impact of the work of rabid supporters in the professional media such as Kristol. Kristol is an "enabler" for the Bush administration. Journalists such as Kristol are allowed to make outrageous statements on a continuous basis without fear of being called out on it by others of note in the media. In Kristol's case, his work always supports the policies of this administration and, consequently, he has lost any claim to impartiality, a key asset for any journalist. Since many in the country are poorly informed, his work serves to mislead and encourage many who have trouble thinking for themselves.

By the way, I have just begun following your blog and enjoy it very much. Your referral to Glenn Greenwald's column was great as well.

Seriously, is there anyone in America who has been more consistently wrong than William Kristol?

Early on he disdainfully dismissed concerns about the hatred between Sunnis and Shi'ites in Iraq as "pop psychology".

How he has any constituency left is beyond me. Why he still gets space on the op-ed page of The Post is a mystery. To believe anything Kristol writes at this point, you would have to be a fool.

If you can find it, watch the BBC special "The Power of Nightmares". Bill Kristol is interviewed, and shows some manic disconnect. It's great.

We can never forget just how effective the neocon naming policy is, they brought us such doozies as 'family values','compassionate conservative','spreading democracy',and of course the 'war on terror'. Most people now recognize these as nothing more than sound bites, but they play well to the Republican base... thank goodness the independents and swing voters didn't buy the message in '06. Kristol being the chief cheerleader for the neocon agenda is at it again with words such as defeatocrat, defeatists, appeaser and just this a.m. on MTP it was 'surrender advocates'. The Right wing base are swallowing this bull hook, line and sinker. Once again AL, great writing, keep it up!

Shopman,
I think you are exactly right, and enough cannot be said about how the Republican base still believes the most absurd statements.

There is a small (25-29%) group of people that I think will ALWAYS believe, no matter what.

The only answer, I think, is to keep trying, and for people like A.L. and Glenn Greenwald to continue to point out the truth, in the great way they do!

KRISTOL: But what if... and what if... and what if...? Then won't we be swimming in ponies?
QUESTIONER: And what if they don't?
KRISTOL: Oh, then we have to go to war with Iran.

The bottom line on Kristol, and neocons generally, is that no matter how pleased they claim to be with the status quo in July 2007, they did not think it was going to be like this.

Those of us who told them this was going to happen were told in return that we were wrong to predict such a disaster. Yes, they called this situation a "disaster" back when they didn't think it was going to happen. Now it has happened, they say it's great progress.
