Adventures in the Passive Voice
The Washington Post's John Solomon, who has made a career out of writing cheap hit pieces on Democratic politicians, has struck again. This time the focus of his tireless investigative reporting is John Edwards' hair stylist. I kid you not. The article's headline reads: Splitting Hairs, Edwards's Stylist Tells His Side of Story: Man Behind Pricey Coifs Details Long Relationship.
As you've no doubt guessed from the headline alone, the article is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with mainstream political reporting. It's a tour de force of triviality and passive aggressiveness. Solomon has gone to the trouble of tracking down Edwards' stylist and interviewing him about everything from the price of his services to his personal political leanings.
What really stands out, though, is Solomon's almost comical use of the passive voice. This paragraph, in particular, is worthy of some kind of award:
Solomon laments that this fascination with Edwards' hair "is some kind of commentary on the state of American politics." Actually, John, it's a commentary on the state of American political reporting, and you are the problem.

It is some kind of commentary on the state of American politics that as Edwards has campaigned for president, vice president and now president again, his hair seems to have attracted as much attention as, say, his position on health care. But when his campaign reported in April that it had paid for two of his haircuts at $400 each, the political damage was immediate. With each punch line on late night TV his image as a self-styled populist making poverty his signature issue was further eroded.Solomon informs us that Edwards' hair "seems to have attracted as much attention as . . . his position on health care." It's as if there is some sort of inexorable force at work here. The hair just attracts attention all on its own, like a magnet attracting metal objects. Journalists like John Solomon apparently have no role in this process. Here's an idea, John: why don't you write an article about Edwards' health care plan instead of wasting all of our time on this trivial garbage?

A.L.
Surely an educated man with advanced degrees cannot believe that the likes of John Solomon are actually behind the "state of American political reporting" and are, in fact, "the problem."
Wouldn't you agree that if it was not Solomon, it would be some other hack?
It is not hard to find people that will "catapult the propoganda" given the current state of media ownership in this county - the mainstream media hoisted a fraudulent, AWOL alcoholic/cocaine addict into the presidential ring and proclaimed that Americans wanted to drink a beer with an obnoxious drunk and coke head.
Then they provided the distractions that enabled the stolen elections of 2000 to stand in this county (most of the rest of the world acknowledges that it was not an honest election).
The administration enabled 9/11 and used it to launch the neocon agenda - MSM did nothing but cheerlead.
The war in Iraq was started with lies - the NYT reported the lies and the media echo-chamber "catapulted the propoganda."
Clearly, our problem is not with those that dutifully crank out the lies on the "mighty wurlitzer."
The real problem is structural and has NOTHING to do with the personalities that you seem to love to single out.
I do not understand why you refuse to talk about the reasons WHY we get "journalists" like this.
Here's an idea, John: why don't you write an article about Edwards' health care plan instead of wasting all of our time on this trivial garbage?
Gee, A.L. - you don't really think that the Wash Post would actually publish a well done analysis of the public's overwhelming support of health care reform and the different ideas to bring universal health care to the US, do you?
Get real - SOLOMON DOES NOT ACTUALLY SET THE AGENDA OF THE WASH POST AND MSM AS A WHOLE!
1,288 words in that story. First rate journalism. And there's a new price in the story: $1,250 which was helpfully mentioned twice so that you don't miss it.
Also nice, the quote from the stylist: "I try to make the man handsome, strong, more mature ..."
Which is what every presidential candidate likes - to be seen as trying to look mature.
Wouldn't you agree that if it was not Solomon, it would be some other hack?
Another writer wouldn't get to the level of asinine hackishness that Solomon regularly does.
I'd even concede that the difference between Solomon and the rest of the MSM is a difference of degree, not kind, but it's an enormous, exponential degree of difference.
j.p. - you are fooling yourself - hacks are a dime a dozen.
The real problem is that these are the people that get "catapulted" to play the "mighty wurlitzer"
Just to be clear, I don't mean to suggest that this problem is confined to Solomon. He's just contributing to the overall problem, and not acknowledging his role. And I agree with J.P., Solomon is particularly bad. He has many more cheap hit pieces to his name than your average reporter.

Boo hoo. Campaigns will make a tremendous effort to humanize their candidate and make sure America gets to know the "real" person - huggable, engaged, caring, wise, and so on ad nauseum. Do you really think any of these campaigns are simply an exercise in establishing which person has the most impressive policy wonkery? Was "Dreams of My Father" by Obama a recounting of his dad's vision for heath care reform?
So if the press wants to poke behind the facade created by the campaigns, why not?
Personally, I was edified by the story from 1983 about Mitt Romney's family vacation with the dog on the roof, and from the attention it got I don't suppose it was just me. But others might argue it was ancient and irrelevant history.
Tom Maguire
I'm with Tom Maguire on this. Alex Massie posted something similar on the Plank re how these little stories ocassionally can provide a useful view of the candidate. Massie's example small story was Bill Clinton's habit of cheating at golf. To Massie that showed him something about Clinton's character. And I agree with Maguire, the Romney dog story certainly causes me to view Romney more negatively as a candidate.
These little stories shouldn't be in place of stories on Edwards' health care plan, but they are not totally useless.
So if the press wants to poke behind the facade created by the campaigns, why not?
Sounds good to me. So when can we expect the gory details on how much Bush (or better yet, the GOP Presidential candidates) spend on their haircuts?
Wouldn't you agree that if it was not Solomon, it would be some other hack?
Yeah, why blame Hitler- the interwar right wing in Germany surely would've put someone else in power had Hitler not made himself available.
Or maybe- just maybe, we can blame both Hitler and the interwar right. Likewise, lambasting Solomon does not somehow imply that the Washington Post is in the clear. Quite the opposite in fact.
So if the press wants to poke behind the facade created by the campaigns, why not?
Tom, I don't disagree in principle. But two things really bother me. One, I hate it when reporters lament the triviality of politics while actively contributing to it. It's grossly hypocritical. They should at least own up to what they are doing.
Second, I think that Democratic politicians are subjected to this sort treatment to a far greater extent that their Republican rivals. Your Romney example is illustrative. Though the blogs picked up on that story, the mainstream media pretty much ignored it, despite the fact that mistreating a dog seems to give much more insight into one's character than getting an expensive haircut. Moreover, the haircut thing seems very unlikely to be unique to John Edwards. I suspect that most big-time politicians who have hair have indulged in this sort of image-consulting and expensive hair care. Want to bet Mitt Romney has similar stories? So why is Edwards singled out? And what does this really say about Edwards character other than he is a rich politician?
What bothers me a lot about this particular line of attack is that it feeds into and off of a larger campaign by those of the Right to "pussify" Edwards, to make him appear to be some sort of effeminate pretty-boy. This is a common Republican attack on Democrats. It was used on John Kerry to great effect. It's what Ann Coulter was trying to do when she dropped the f-word on Edwards at CPAC.
And you typically don't see this kind of stuff happen to Republicans. George Bush's entire schtick in 2000, that he was some sort of Texas cowboy instead of a prep-school son of royalty, was entirely phoney. But the media never pointed that out. He was "authentic". Instead, it was Gore who was the big phoney. Ditto in 2004 with Kerry.
Which I guess is a long way of saying that I think this "poke behind the facade" kind of reporting tends to be very lop-sided at expense of Democrats and tends to focus on things that don't really give us much insight behind the facade.
Not that it matters, or rather should matter, but do we know how much the Republican candidates spend on their haircuts?
Do we know, for instance, that Thompson or Giuliani don't at times spend, say, $1350 for a slick stylist travel and trim their limited locks?
I wouldn't assume the answer in advance. For instance, the press had a lot of fun with the fact that Edwards is a client of an outfit called "Pink Sapphire". But as Bob Somerby pointed out, McCain also uses Pink Sapphire: They both get makeup done by PS before television appearances, though that doesn't stop Maureen Dowd and others from hinting that Edwards is getting facials. And, as Somerby has documented, the MSM doesn't seem to feel the need to acknowledge either of these points (makeup not facials, McCain as well as Edwards), except perhaps implicitly by no longer pushing this angle.
But of course the media is liberally biased, so what am I talking about?
Didn't Dan Rather rather zealously pursue a certain Bush privilege story?
I at least don't recall the MSM making things up about Dem candidates.
Anonymous,
Go read the Daily Howler to refresh your memory. Ever hear of Al Gore?
Wait! It’s even more outrageous than you might imagine.
The original headline, at least on the WaPo web site, was (I couldn’t make this up):
Edwards’s Hair Stylist Takes It From The Top
They changed it after a few hours. Snarkily homophobic. Solomon is as bad as John Harris, and this piece sounds like it was dictated by an opposition researcher — from their mouth to his eager fingers.
Taking it from the top? No, Solomon’s a bottom-feeder.
Great analysis, and the sad thing is he's merely recapping what The Politico did not long ago.
The power structure probably fears Edwards more than any other candidate because of his populism. Clinton, Obama, the Republicans -- they can all be reined in through connections from their old Ivy League law school buddies or corporate elites, people who know who really run the country (and want to keep it that way). That isn't true for Edwards.
anon - 10:25
You are a moron - hitler had his enablers in the media - he came to power with their help. Ignorant analogy.
Today they are nameless, faceless nobodies - it doesn't matter who the lying liars that catapult the propoganda are.
ITS THE MEDIA STRUCTURE THAT GIVES THEM THE HOUSE ORGAN IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Neither did Rather moron.
Apparently bush had his 'Mission Accomplished' aircraft carrier turn around so that he could get his hair dyed before his photo op. Take a guess how many TAX PAYER dollars THAT cost.
So much for the name Solomon?
What an odd coincidence when the MSM leaks about (a) Gore’s son’s DUI which hurts
Gore if he enters the primary and helps Sen. Barak Hussein Obama, (b) John Edwards’s $1,200 hair cut, again helps B. Hussein Obama to get the anyone-but-Hillary vote when Edwards drops out, (c) negative, personally destructive, You Tube ad against Hillary Clinton from B. Hussein Obama’s camp (destroying Hillary helps B. Hussein, the second runner-up), B. Hussein falsely claiming he has no clue, then firing his employee.
Too many coincidences, but B. Hussein benefits.
John Edwards / please shave your head or take to wearing wigs so the msm will talk about health care instead / smile
i am a supprter of John Edwards
