Asking the Right Questions About Iran
Josh is right. Reporters are getting side-tracked by the Bush administration when it comes to the issue of Iranian weapons. They're focusing on the dispute over whether these shipments were authorized by the highest levels of the Iranian government. That's an interesting question, but the far more important and pressing question is where these shipments are going. This is where the Bush administration is being intentionally evasive. Both Bush and the anonymous military briefers claim that the weapons are being shipped to "extremist groups." That's an intentionally cryptic phrase. The administration wants to imply, without actually saying so explicitly, that Iran is shipping weapons directly to Iraqi insurgents, who then use those weapons to blow up American troops. But that's a highly implausible claim. If the Iranians, particularly Iranian government officials, are indeed shipping weapons to Iraq, it is far more likely that the weapons are being provided to Shia paramilitary groups allied with the Maliki government. Some of these weapons may then end up in insurgent hands through the black market (in much the same way U.S. made weapons end up in insurgent hands), but the Iranian connection is attenuated.
The key question is this: if Iran is shipping weapons to Iraq, why is it doing so? That question can only be answered if we are told precisely which "extremist groups" the Iranians are shipping the weapons to. Obviously, shipping weapons to Shia militias reflects different intentions than shipping weapons to al Qaeda or Sunni insurgents. Reporters need to press the administration on these issues and not get side-tracked by the less important question of who authorized the shipments.
UPDATE: Spencer Ackerman is asking the right questions.

I can't help but wonder if part of what is going on here is that the question of who did or did not order the shipments is a relatively easy one for the press to grab on to.
On the other hand, getting into questions about where the arms are or are not going (and why) is murkier, requiring some research on the part of reporters into various factions of Sunni and Shia groups.
Obviously, these aren't exactly rocket-science type questions, but given the general level of discourse in the mainstream press, I'd be surprised to see too many White House correspondents clicking through Wikipedia entries in order to discover that it makes little sense that the Iranians would be arming Sunni insurgents in Iraq.
Think seriously about buying my eye-opening, efficacious, avant-garde novel. You will, thus, receive enlightenment from thy inner self how to proceed in this Finite Existence… with 24/7 sardonic satire, of course. It’s a win/win situation, dude. God bless you. Be at peace.
Pete - if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck....
This is propaganda - pure and simple - the same type of propaganda that was used to launch the war in Iraq.
Quit making excuses for the lying liars - people like you are just as guilty of sidetracking the dialog from the real issues as the MSM masses you refer to in such a condescending manner.
Forget the discourse - that is just manufactured anyhow - ITS THE PROPAGANDA, STUPID!
There are alot weapons being used by the "insurgents" bearing a Made In USA stamp on them and bought on the black market with Saudi money as well. In addition,Iraq is virtually littered with bombs. After two decades of war and fighting, there are more than a million tons of live munitions lying under foot.
How did the "liberal media" miss that?
