Where's the Unity?

Last week, at a speech before the American Legion National Convention, Donald Rumsfeld made the following observation:

It seems that in some quarters there's more of a focus on
dividing our country than acting with unity against the
gathering threats.

It's hard to image a more deeply cynical statement. After all, Rumsfeld was speaking on behalf of an administration that has, from as early as 2002, engaged in a deliberate strategy of dividing the nation on issues of national security. This is something I've written about previously:
In the summer of 2002, less than one year after the most
traumatic day in modern American history, the Bush White
House made the decision to "run on the war." In the days after
9/11, the American people came together; Republicans and
Democrats largely put their ideological differences to the side
and pledged their support for the war on terror. Overwhelming
majorities favored our invasion of Afghanistan, a move that
we all agreed was an eminently logical and necessary response
to the 9/11 attacks. The world was with us too. The coalition of
the willing included just about everyone.

But in the summer of 2002, Bush and his advisors made a
fateful decision. They looked around, saw a unified nation, and
decided it was time to cash in politically. They decided to turn
terrorism and war into political issues and use them to solidify
GOP control of Congress. Suddenly, decorated war veterans
like Max Cleland found themselves being attacked for being
soft on terrorism because they took issue with the labor
provisions of the Homeland Security Act. Karl Rove and his
surrogates made a point of characterizing any Democratic
disagreement with anything as being "soft on terror."

And from that point on, there was no turning back. The GOP
was carried to victory on the fumes of a national unity that
would soon be completely dried up.
This has always been an intentional strategy on the part of the White House. They saw an opportunity to seize the issue of terrorism for the Republican Party and they took it (or at least tried). They didn't want bipartisanship. They wanted to own this issue, to be able to use it as a perpetual club with which to beat their political enemies over the head. They knew that one of the prices of following this strategy would be a lack of national unity with respect to our foreign policy initiatives. They didn't care. In fact, they were counting on it. They figured a climate of disunity and bitter polarization would ultimately favor the GOP.

This strategy is evident in every single foreign policy address made by the Bush administration from 2002 onward. Every one of these speeches, at least at some point, badly mischaracterizes the views of the administration's critics. We've been treated to nothing but strawman rhetoric for years. While this may be an effective way to gin up support among your base and convince some swing voters, it is, needles to say, not the best way to win over your critics or foster national unity.

But putting rhetoric and politics aside, there's a deeper problem. The disagreement over our current policies is fundamental. We all agree that we should be working to reduce the threat of terrorism. But many of us feel that the strategies we've pursued over the last few years, particularly the invasion of Iraq, are fundamentally counterproductive, that we're creating more problems than we're solving. You’re never going to have unity when one side thinks we're moving forward and the other thinks we're moving backward. Does Rumsfeld really expect those of us who think we are about to march over a cliff to just shut up and get in line? If so, what makes us any different than lemmings?

Of course the repugs want to "own" terrorist - 911 was an inside job that was created specifically for that purpose!

It was created to cover the theft of the 2000 election and rally the nation into a war - extremely profitable for the military-industrial complex (oil industry is a major component) that the bush family has served for generations.

Chimpy's grandfather, prescott, was one of the public figures for the group that brought hilter to power. He made the family fortune financing the Nazi war machine - it does not come from oil.

The Bush administration had the motives, means, and opportunity to create the events of September 11, 2006, that enabled a war of conquest and personal profits in Iraq. The administration acted to bring their preconceived war in Iraq to fruitarian.

Only the U.S Government could have orchestrated the events that started the war drums and fed the mighty Wurlitzer that was used to build support for the Iraq war.

The Department of Defense stood down

The WTC was demolished with a controlled demolition

The pentagon was “attacked” with a hoax about a passenger airliner

Another hoax was used to create a distraction in PA, flight 93 and build the myth of “Let’s Roll”

Pre-9/11 intelligence failures-by-design were used to create “patsies” with excuses for the events

The power of a grand jury or even the "discovery" process in a civil suit would result in a meaningful investigation. It might convince some to talk and the ability to grant some people immunity might result in "flipping" some conspirators.

The actions of the defendants tell you they are guilty. For example, it would be a serious violation of rules and regulations to let a president read an upside-down goat book while the nation was experiencing the worst attack on U.S. soil in history.

The “official story” would be laughable on its face if it wasn’t so tragic and if it wasn’t used to commit even greater war crimes and crimes against humanity. There is no way the administration’s version of events could withstand cross-examination by competent counsel.

Lemmings are not such compliant consumers. They will not sit in front of a boob-tube or listen to highly commercialized music owned by the media oligopoly.

In many ways, lemmings are much more independent and more apt to think critically.

As is often the case, a look to the bard can be illustrative. After usurping the throne from the "legit" monarch (admittedly a different system, different standard of legit -- but we can see the parallel), in order to deflect criticism, which in this case is mixed with self-doubt and a bad conscience (where, sadly, we can see NO parallel at all), the new King Henry IV announces a new war against -- you guessed it! -- the Muslims. He begins by addressing one of his minions (Karl Rove?) who has just assassinated the already deposed King Richard:

The guilt of conscience take thou for thy labor,
But neither my good word nor princely favor.
With Cain go wander thorough shades of night,
And never show thy head by day nor light.
Lords, I protest my soul is full of woe
That blood should sprinkle me to make me grow.
Come, mourn with me for what I do lament,
And put on a sullen black incontinent.
I'll make a voyage to the Holy Land
To wash this blood off from my guilty hand.
March sadly after. Grace my mournings here
In weeping after this untimely bier.

Later, his son, Henry V, who has been compared to our current King George, does the same thing, demanding unity at home for his crusade against the French.

But, Bush doesn't read Shakespeare (only Camus!), so he wouldn't understand the ironies of history.

Well said.

The distinguishing feature of neoconservative Republicans is their anything-to-win compulsion. It's more like a heroin addict's determination to get his fix than what for generations was accepted as normal political competitiveness.

Precisely--the war felons who lead us don't want us to be citizens, they want us to be lemmings.

These felons have no clue as to the tenets of American citizenship. They don't want to know. What they do want is to kill your sons and daughters for lies, to take your money so the ruch can keep theirs, and for you to SHUT UP about it.

Sometimes I'm surprised Rummy is not beset by mobs and beaten unconscious, he's such a provactive, stupid asshole.

paradox, good points. They also expect you to praise them for all of this and vote for them too, but if not, they have already undermined the integrity of all elections so that they can stay in power even if the masses are not grateful.
