Back to the Grand Jury . . .
From today's Wall Street Journal:
Given Fitzgerald's reputation for thoroughness, there's a reasonably high likelihood that Woodward's source--whether it's Hadley, Cheney, or some other official--testified in some capacity prior to Libby's indictment. If so, that source clearly failed to mention his/her conversation with Woodward. And it's very hard to believe that Fitzgerald wouldn't have asked that official directly whether he/she spoke with any reporters about Wilson's wife. So Woodward's source, whoever it is, could be facing false statement, perjury, or even obstruction of justice charges. Libby may soon have company.
UPDATE: Reuters is reporting that the White House has denied that Hadley is Woodward's source. Still no denial regarding Cheney.
The White House now must brace itself for the
possibility that Mr. Fitzgerald's probe, far from
winding down, may have just gotten a second
wind. Prosecutors deposed Mr. Woodward in
anticipation of presenting that evidence to a
new grand jury, according to a person familiar
with the situation.

So why did they come forward?
The Times today and the WaPo yesterday had a hint - Woodward may have been bugging his source for permission to write something. But Woodward has a pretty good rep for keeping secrets.
And he won't be ratting out his sources for the next book - "Bush at Bay".

"So why did they come forward?"
That's the million dollar question. My guess is that this person feared that the information would come out eventually and that the fallout would be less severe if he came clean now. He may not have feared Woodward spilling the beans, but it's possible Libby and others at the White House knew something about this. He may have feared that pressure from Fitzgerald would eventually pry this secret loose.
The night before Libby was indicted, Isikoff said on Larry King Live that a White House source told him that Woodward had an explosive scoop. That may have been a not-so-subtle shot across the bow of Woodward's source. Having heard that, he probably knew that it was just a matter of time before Fitzgerald started asking questions. It was time to come forward.
