McCain as an Independent in 2008?

Over at Slate, there is an interesting discussion about the obstacles John McCain would face if he ran as an independent in 2008. It's conceivable that McCain could win the popular vote by a sizable margin, only to have the House elect the third place Republican candidate. President Frist, perhaps? It's hard to imagine anything scarier.
