Flag Burning Amendment

It looks as if Congress may soon pass a constitutional amendment banning flag burning. Putting aside the fact that there has only been one documented case of flag burning in the U.S. in the last five years, is there anything more unamerican than banning a purely symbolic gesture? An anti-flag burning amendment may be the ultimate irony: it undermines the very principles the flag stands for, and perhaps most ironic of all, it's passage will no doubt lead to countless flags being burned in protest of the amendment itself.
